Job summary

The State of Alaska, via the Alaska Marine Highway System, is seeking a 2nd Assistant Engineer to oversee the safe operation of engineering machinery aboard AMHS vessels and to log all relevant data. You will supervise maintenance and repairs, lead lifeboat and emergency response teams, and report to the First Assistant Engineer for a professional, efficient watch.

AMHS operates 24/7 with 2 week-on/2 week-off rotations, demanding flexibility as crew duties shift across vessel assignments to meet

Qualifications

• USCG Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) with STCW endorsements listed.
• National endorsements: Second Assistant Engineer Motor Propelled Vessels (any HP) and Lifeboat Operator.
• TWIC card, DOT drug test, USCG Medical Certificate, driver's license.

Responsibilities

• Oversee safe and efficient operation of engineering machinery, equipment and spaces, logging data.
• Conduct routine maintenance and repairs on engine room machinery and auxiliary equipment.
• Supervise repairs by ship crew, technicians or shore facilities; participate in lifeboat and emergency response teams.
• Maintain a professional watch and ensure crew execute duties effectively; report to the First Assistant Engineer.

Education

USCG MMC with STCW endorsements (Basic Safety, Survival Craft, Officer in Charge of an Engineering Watch, Vessel Personnel with Designated Security Duties)
