Overview

The Alamance Fabric is a news initiative for Alamance County, a diverse and growing county in the central Piedmont region of North Carolina. NC Local, a statewide newsroom, operates as a hub of development for new initiatives, journalism and services that shed light on issues shaping North Carolina.

The Fabric fills needs expressed during extensive community listening from a diverse group of Alamance residents. In addition to the newsletter, the Fabric provides community engagement opportunities and partnerships with local institutions. We’re seeking a lead to work with our core NC Local hub team to guide local reporting and engagement efforts for Alamance County.

Position Summary:

The Alamance County Community Reporter works with NC Local to report, write and publish a weekly newsletter product and brand focused on Alamance County news. The reporter serves as the primary writer, so reporting and writing skills are critical. The position also manages the Alamance Fabric website as well as social media accounts on Facebook and Instagram.

The role may also assign, coordinate and edit content from contributing writers, student journalists and community partners. The reporter also convenes community members to learn about their information needs, develop strong relationships with the community, promote and market the newsletter and grow readership among the community.

What you’ll do

Lead news and information production for Alamance County. Report, write and curate original news for the weekly newsletter Test, iterate and refine the content strategy for the newsletter Collaborate with contributing writers, student journalists and other partners Contribute to NC Local’s core product through reporting, community engagement events and other opportunities

Listen to and convene the community. Bring communities together for ongoing community listening, engagement opportunities and events with assistance from the NC Local hub team Conduct digital and offline surveys to gather ongoing community input and feedback

Grow the product’s impact on Alamance residents. Promote and grow readership lists for the newsletter Serve as the face and ambassador for the Fabric Track analytics for newsletter and devise growth plans

Skills and Experience:

This role is primarily a reporting and writing position. The ideal candidate should be able to demonstrate experience in reporting, writing and community engagement skills, though we do not expect the same level of strength across all categories.

The strongest candidates will have skills and experience in the following core areas:

Community or audience engagement Newsletter writing, editing or product skills Local news reporting experience An engaging, personable writing voice

You’ll stand out if you have experience in any of the following areas:

Collaboration and partnership with news and non-news organizations Producing social media content Ties to the Alamance County community Working Spanish proficiency Curiosity, generosity and coachability A willingness to take an experimental and innovative approach to journalism and community engagement

Compensation and Benefits:

NC Local offers competitive salaries and benefits that focus on the well-being of its employees. This role’s salary range begins at $70,000, with compensation dependent on experience and skills. NC Local offers generous health, dental and vision insurance, as well as other benefits, including paid holidays, vacation and personal time off.

NC Local is a remote-first organization, and the reporter may work anywhere in Alamance County.
