Job Description

Essential Functions and Accountabilities

  • Provide the total nursing activities and supervise subordinates for all patients/residents during working hours, assuring patient/resident safety.
  • Develop and maintain a good working rapport with inter-departmental personnel to assure nursing services and activities meet patient needs.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining nursing objectives and standards.
  • Assist in developing, implementing, and coordinating department policies and procedures, resident/patient care plans, nursing procedure manuals, job descriptions, etc.
  • Interpret department policies and procedures to personnel, residents/patients, visitors, family members, etc., as necessary.
  • Ensure patients’ rights to fair and equitable treatment, self-determination, privacy, and civil rights are upheld.
  • Assure infection control procedures and isolation techniques are followed.
  • Create and maintain a warm, positive environment.
  • Assist in training department personnel and make recommendations to the CNO/DON concerning training.
  • Complete administrative requirements and submit to the CNO/DON.
  • Assist in evaluating and coordinating care plans with other disciplines.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient information; protect rights.
  • Evaluate emergencies and determine emergency measures as needed.
  • Make independent decisions regarding nursing care.
  • Complete required patient record-keeping forms.
  • Notify physician of accidents and complete incident reports as needed.
  • Maintain stock levels of medications and supplies; report needs to CNO/DON or Purchasing Agent.
  • Attend and participate in staff/department meetings and trainings.
  • Give and receive nursing reports at shift change; document physician orders accurately.
  • Transcribe physician orders to electronic systems and related documents.
  • Report unsafe conditions and request repairs.
  • Monitor and report patient response to treatments and medications.
  • Other duties as necessary or directed.
Physical Working Conditions
  • Move intermittently throughout the workday.
  • Cope with mental and emotional stress of the position.
  • Maintain adequate sight/hearing or use assistive devices as needed.
  • Function independently with flexibility and integrity while collaborating with patients and staff.
  • Be in good general health and demonstrate emotional stability.
  • Relate to and work with ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, or hostile individuals as needed.
  • May be required to lift patients and/or equipment.
Education, Certifications, and Licenses
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program (Bachelor’s, Associate, or Diploma in Nursing).
  • Current full, unrestricted RN license in Alaska or another U.S. state.
  • Direct Hire must have Alaska nursing license application started before start date; agency staff must have active Alaska license.
  • BLS, ACLS, and PALS (or obtain within 6 months of hire; maintained biannually).
  • TNCC certification preferred (required for ED nurses).
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Clinical Competency required within 3 months of hire and every 3 years; High Risk Competency within 3 months and annually.
