Job description

An Airport Electrical Maintenance Technician is responsible for performing a variety of semiskilled and skilled tasks in the maintenance of the airfield and adjacent City-owned buildings. The incumbent has primary responsibilities for working with high-voltage electrical systems (up to 5,000 volts) with no margin of error. Works with high voltage lines and changes out transformers for runway, taxiway, and threshold lighting. Maintains specialized airport lighting (PAPI, REIL, etc.) and beacon navigational aids, and changes out electrical relays, points, and circuit boards; and utilizes test equipment and checks to see that navigational aids are in proper angle. Replaces burned wiring, circuit breakers, switches, fuses, and brushes. Rebuilds and replaces damaged and outdated light fixtures for taxiway/runway and threshold. Performs electrical safety inspections in hangars and repairs and replaces receptacles and light switches, and tests voltage and amps to comply with appropriate codes. Assists, as needed, in airport improvement projects and ensures contractors are in compliance with safety requirements for an airport. Uses appropriate safety equipment and follows safety procedures, including unique requirements of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Assists with other airport maintenance duties such as mowing airfield grass, performing runway inspections, picking up trash and foreign object debris (FOD), issuing Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM), and conducting perimeter safety fence inspections. An employee of this class is required to respond to air-related emergency situations and weather emergencies on a 24-hour a day/7 days per week basis. This position assumes all duties of supervisor in his/her absence and performs related duties as required.

This class is distinguished from the class Airport Maintenance and Operations Technician by its requirement to work with high voltage electrical systems, and the requirement to perform supervisor’s duties in his/her absence. This class is supervised by the Airport Maintenance and Operations Supervisor and is FLSA nonexempt.

Minimum Qualifications Required. Any combination of training, education, and experience equivalent to graduation from high school or GED. Completion of trade/vocational school training in high voltage electrical systems or certification by the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE) as an Airport Certified Employee (ACE) - Airfield Lighting Maintenance. Good (1 - 3 years) experience in facilities and grounds maintenance, or other related maintenance experience.

Special Requirements. Must possess a valid Class D Arizona Driver's License by hire or promotion date. Must obtain certification by the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE) as an Airport Certified Employee (ACE) - Airfield Lighting Maintenance within six (6) months of hire or promotion date.

Substance Abuse Testing. Due to the safety and/or security sensitive nature of this classification, individuals shall be subject to pre-employment or pre-placement alcohol, drug and/or controlled substance testing as outlined in City policy and procedures.

Preferred/Desirable Qualifications. Experience in the operation and maintenance of airfield equipment and six (6) months or more of general airfield maintenance is desirable. Experience using two-way radio in airport setting is highly preferred.
