Job summary

McFarland Johnson (MJ), a 100% employee-owned firm with 80 years of experience, seeks an experienced Aviation Electrical Engineer to join our Northeast Aviation division. You will lead airfield electrical design, construction management, and project delivery across multiple FAA-compliant projects.

Ideal candidates hold a PE, a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, and 10+ years of progressive aviation electrical leadership.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, PE required, 10+ years of progressive FAA-compliant aviation electrical project leadership.
  • Experience managing technical staff and growing client relationships to support business development.
  • Strong technical and leadership skills to deliver complex airport and airfield infrastructure projects in a team environment.

Responsibilities

  • Lead planning, design, and construction administration of airfield electrical projects (runway/taxiway lighting, NAVAIDs, signage, power distribution).
  • Prepare and oversee engineering plans, specs, cost estimates, reports, and FAA-compliant contract documents.
  • Manage projects through all phases from concept to closeout and ensure schedules and budgets.
  • Provide construction management services including coordination, field inspections, and change order evaluation.
  • Supervise and mentor engineering staff and ensure quality control.
  • Coordinate with airport owners, FAA, regulators, contractors, and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Support business development, client relationships, proposals, and growth initiatives.
  • Develop project scopes, staffing plans, schedules, and fee proposals.
  • Participate in marketing, conferences, and professional societies.

We are seeking an experienced Aviation Electrical Engineer with a strong background in airfield electrical design, construction management, and project delivery to join our growing Aviation division in any of our Northeast office locations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the planning, design, and construction administration of airfield electrical projects, including runway and taxiway lighting systems, navigational aids (NAVAIDs), signage, power distribution systems, and related airport infrastructure.
  • Prepare and oversee the development of engineering plans, specifications, cost estimates, technical reports, and contract documents in accordance with FAA standards and applicable codes.
  • Manage projects through all phases, from conceptual planning and design through bidding, construction, commissioning, and closeout.
  • Provide construction management services, including contractor coordination, submittal review, field inspections, change order evaluation, and project documentation.
  • Supervise, mentor, and develop engineering and technical staff while ensuring quality control and adherence to project schedules and budgets.
  • Coordinate with airport owners, FAA representatives, regulatory agencies, contractors, and multidisciplinary design teams.
  • Support business development activities, including client relationship management, proposal preparation, interviews, and strategic growth initiatives.
  • Develop project scopes of work, staffing plans, schedules, and fee proposals for aviation projects.
  • Participate in marketing efforts, attend industry conferences, participate in professional societies and associations, and identify opportunities for new and repeat business.
  • Ensure compliance with FAA Advisory Circulars, airport design standards, electrical codes, and industry best practices.
  • Collaborate effectively within a team-oriented environment while providing leadership on complex assignments.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering
  • PE required
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience leading FAA-compliant aviation electrical projects
  • Managing technical staff
  • Developing client relationships and supporting business growth initiatives.
  • Requires both technical expertise and leadership skills to successfully deliver complex airport and airfield infrastructure projects
