Job summary

The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is seeking a qualified engineer to review routine permit applications and related submittals, ensuring completeness and compliance with applicable laws and policies. The role requires driving, and a valid license, with a hybrid schedule including in-office and telework from the Virginia location.

Responsibilities include evaluating air pollution control technologies, developing calculations, and drafting enforceable permits.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of chemical, mechanical, environmental, or civil engineering principles and how to apply them to permit applications and drafting enforceable permits.
• Knowledge of environmental law and ability to read, interpret and apply complex policies and regulations.
• Knowledge of industrial processes and operations; ability to read and evaluate complex permit applications and engineering analyses.
• Ability to plan and work in a team, with strong interpersonal and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Evaluate air pollution control technologies and develop calculations for permit issuance.
• Draft enforceable permits in accordance with laws, regulations, and agency policies.
• Provide technical support for permit-related compliance and enforcement actions; coordinate with applicants and staff to resolve issues.
