Job summary

The United States Air Force seeks a Flight Surgeon to serve as the primary care physician for air and missile crews, leading a team to develop preventive practices for optimal aircrew health and performance.

Responsibilities include conducting examinations, evaluating fitness for flight, and coordinating aeromedical evacuation and mishap investigations, with broad benefits and opportunities for advancement within the service.

Qualifications

  • Completion of a U.S. residency at a fully accredited residency program with subsequent board certification in that primary specialty.
  • Board certification must be current and in a primary care specialty such as family, emergency, pediatrics, internal medicine or by the ABPM, with proof of primary care privileges for the prior 12 months.
  • Completion of a flight physical (USAF Flying Class II).
  • Completion of the Aerospace Medicine Primary (AMP) course (~nine weeks).
  • Completion of eight-week Officer Training School.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen aged 18–47.
  • Must be willing to relocate.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct medical examinations and provide care for air and missile crews.
  • Determine fitness for flying and special duties and evaluate living and working environments to detect health hazards.
  • Regularly participate in flying missions to observe and advise on aeromedical issues.
  • Develop and manage preventive medicine programs, including education of flight personnel in healthy lifestyles.
  • Establish procedures for managing casualties in aviation accidents and other disasters.
  • Provide advice on aeromedical evacuation and serve on aviation mishap investigation boards.
  • Serve as liaison between flying squadrons and medical services.
