Job summary

The United States Air Force seeks a Flight Surgeon to serve as the primary care physician for pilots, aircrew and special-duty operators, leading a team to develop and implement preventive health practices.

This commission offers robust benefits and career opportunities within a structured military environment, with a schedule of M-F 9-5 and opportunities for professional travel and advancement.

Qualifications

  • Completion of a U.S. residency in a fully accredited program with board certification in a primary care specialty.
  • Board certification must be current and in a primary care field such as family, emergency, pediatrics, internal medicine or ABPM.
  • Must have completed a USAF Flying Class II flight physical.
  • Must complete the Aerospace Medicine Primary (AMP) course (about nine weeks).
  • Must finish eight-week Officer Training School.
  • U.S. citizenship required.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct medical examinations and provide care for air and missile crews.
  • Determine fitness for flying and special duties; evaluate environments for health hazards.
  • Regularly participate in flying missions to observe and advise on aeromedical issues.
  • Develop and manage preventive medicine programs and educate flight personnel on healthy lifestyles.
  • Establish procedures for managing casualties in aviation accidents and other disasters.
  • Advise on aeromedical evacuation and serve on aviation mishap investigation boards.
  • Serve as liaison between flying squadrons and medical services.

Education

U.S. residency completed (fully accredited)
Board certification in a primary care specialty (family/emergency/pediatrics/internal medicine) or ABPM
USAF Flying Class II flight physical
Aerospace Medicine Primary (AMP) course
Officer Training School (8 weeks)
U.S. citizenship
