Job summary

Michigan Medicine is seeking a full-time AI Systems Engineer to design, build, and maintain data pipelines and AI-enabled tools across our research and clinical initiatives.

This role sits at the intersection of data engineering and AI systems development, focusing on OpenShift/Kubernetes infrastructure, integrating tools with MiChart and Epic/MiChart, and ensuring HIPAA-compliant, secure deployments in a collaborative, research-driven environment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in CS, Software Eng, or related field, or equivalent experience.
• 3-5 years deploying AI tools and systems.
• Kubernetes/OpenShift experience for container orchestration.
• Python or equivalent for data engineering and systems development.
• Cloud-native infra and DevOps, including CI/CD pipelines and Git.
• Experience integrating software with external APIs and enterprise platforms.
• Strong communication skills, both oral and written, across technical and non-technical teams.
• Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and accuracy.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain data pipelines and AI systems for research and clinical workflows.
• Develop and manage containerized applications and services using Kubernetes (OpenShift).
• Integrate AI tools and research platforms with MiChart, ChatGPT/Claude, REDCap, and other Michigan Medicine infrastructure.
• Architect and maintain backend systems powering AI-enabled research tools (PRISM and HELPR LLM Tools).
• Collaborate with researchers, clinicians, and technical teams to translate requirements into production-ready systems.
• Ensure systems meet HIPAA compliance and data governance standards.
• Create clear technical documentation for all systems, pipelines, and integrations.
