Job summary

Robots & Pencils in Houston seeks a Staff AI Engineer to lead design and delivery of AI/ML systems. This role is ideal for an experienced engineer who owns end-to-end architecture and provides technical leadership across the team.

Onsite in Houston 50% of the time. You will build scalable platforms, guide model development, ensure reliability, security and cost effectiveness, and shape AI strategy with product and leadership.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of software engineering, with 4+ years in AI/ML in production.
• Strong Python or similar language with design sensibilities for scalable systems.
• Deep AWS cloud experience, including GenAI offerings.
• Proven track record shipping complex agentic AI systems in production.
• Mastery of AI frameworks and orchestration tools.
• Experience with evaluation frameworks and observability for LLM apps.

Responsibilities

• Lead the design and implementation of complex ML/AI systems end-to-end, owning architecture decisions and production-scale solutions.
• Build and evolve scalable ML platforms, pipelines, and infrastructure across teams.
• Set the standard for AI-forward engineering and adoption of Claude Code and Cursor.
