Job summary

3M is seeking an AI Software Developer, Early Career, to join an internal incubator building new AI architectures. You will convert Python research code into scalable Rust components and contribute to tests, simulations, and deployment tooling. Collaborate with researchers and engineers to balance accuracy with production readiness.

You will work onsite in Maplewood, MN, with opportunities to learn structured symbolic computation while handling confidential IP in a low-ego team culture.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, applied mathematics, physics, cognitive science, computational neuroscience, or a related field (completed and verified prior to start).
• Five or more years of experience developing, testing, and maintaining software or technology systems, with substantial hands-on programming experience.
• Five (5) years programming ability in Python and either C++, Rust, or another systems programming language.
• Three (3) years of core software-engineering practices, including version control, code review, debugging, automated testing, and technical documentation.

Responsibilities

• Translating Python research modules into readable, tested Rust components.
• Building and maintaining unit, integration, regression, simulation, and other tests; QA and production validation.
• Implementing stable interfaces and runtime components within a modular architecture.
• Profiling CPU usage, memory, latency, and throughput to improve performance and scalability.
• Supporting containerization, CI/CD, observability, and deployment automation.
• Helping create components for real-time inference, cloud services, and edge environments.
• Collaborating with researchers and engineers to clarify requirements and trade-offs.
