Job summary

Cengage Group in Washington, DC is seeking a Software Engineer to deliver a world-class learning experience on our CLP platforms. You will join a cross-functional team, implementing an AI-first roadmap and collaborating with product, design, and QA to ship accessible, high-quality software.

You will design and build end-to-end features using Java/Spring on the backend and React on the frontend, develop scalable APIs, and participate in platform modernization.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in CS or related field or equivalent practical experience.
• 2–5+ years of professional software engineering experience.
• Experience with full-stack development (Java/Spring and React).
• Familiarity with AI/ML concepts and generative AI is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Work on a high-performing engineering team focused on quality and continuous improvement.
• Design, develop, and maintain end-to-end features across backend (Java/Spring) and frontend (React).
• Build dynamic, accessible user interfaces with React.
• Develop scalable backend services and RESTful APIs.
• Collaborate with Product, UX, QA, and other engineers.
• Write clean, maintainable code with modern frontend patterns and scalable backend practices.
• Troubleshoot UI, API, and performance bottlenecks.
• Contribute to platform modernization efforts.
