Job summary

ABB is hiring an intern to work onsite or hybrid in Cary, NC. You will help build the AI layer including agents, tools, and data connectors in Python, reading systems via APIs and SQL.

You will design multi-step workflows with human-in-the-loop approval and ensure accurate retrieval through queries or API calls. You will ship weekly updates, demonstrate progress to the team, and document learnings for future projects.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in a master's program, or in the third or fourth year of a bachelor's program, in computer science, mathematics, data science or industrial engineering in the United States.
• Master's students preferred.
• Available to continue part-time, remotely, for about six months after the summer, alongside your studies.
• Intern must have reliable transportation to and from the worksite during the summer.
• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship now and in the future.
• Python you've shipped: a project someone else can run, with git and tests.
• Hands-on experience building with LLMs: model APIs, tool calling, structured outputs.
• SQL, including joins across multiple tables.
• A working understanding of REST APIs and JSON.
• Valued, not required: LangGraph or another agent framework; embeddings, vector search and RAG; MCP; knowledge graphs; a cloud platform.

Responsibilities

• Building the AI layer's agents, tools and data connectors in Python reading from business systems via APIs and SQL.
• Designing multi-step workflows with agent flows in LangGraph or similar framework with human approval.
• Determining the right retrieval for questions: database query, API call or document search.
• Building evaluation sets and measuring answer accuracy to improve performance.
• Weekly delivery: shipping small pieces and demoing to team and business users.
• Documenting what you build and learn for future onboarding.
