Job summary

Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH in Jülich seeks an AI Consultant for Science to turn theoretical AI ideas into scalable HPC solutions. You will join the AI Consulting Team and work with scientists across Chemistry, Numerics, Biology, Astrophysics, and Particle Physics on ML applications.

You will advance ML methods, train on HPCs, publish research results, and help educate through courses and hackathons. English proficiency is essential; German knowledge is nice to have. Start ASAP.

Qualifications

  • Broad knowledge and practical experience in AI and applied ML.
  • Excellent Master and preferably PhD in CS, Math, Physics or similar.
  • Interest in diverse scientific topics and multidisciplinary work.
  • Hands-on ML/DL workflows with common software libraries.
  • Experience with uncertain data and probabilistic modeling is a plus.
  • Documentation of research results in papers and OSS projects.

Responsibilities

  • Identify new ML applications in science, engineering, and technology.
  • Develop, implement and refine ML techniques.
  • Implement parallel ML training on HPC systems.
  • Engage with Helmholtz AI platform communities.
  • Present results at conferences and in scientific papers.

AI Consultant for Science

Are you passionate about using artificial intelligence to solve complex, interdisciplinary challenges? Are you interested in transforming theoretical AI concepts into practical, scalable solutions on high-performance computing (HPC) systems? If so, we invite you to join our AI Consulting Team at the Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC), home to Europe's most advanced supercomputing infrastructure, including JUPITER, Europe’s first Exascale system. Our team explores new applications of AI in collaboration with the diverse scientific disciplines associated with the Helmholtz Association.

Within our lab “Applied Machine Learning”, you will play a crucial role in the implementation and development of state-of-the-art machine learning applications for scientific research. Join us in shaping the future of science with AI, where your expertise will contribute to groundbreaking interdisciplinary projects.

Your Job

In this position, you will be an active part of our AI Consulting Team. Together with our partners, we develop new and innovative applications of Machine Learning. You will connect to scientists and investigate possible applications of ML in fields like Chemistry, Numerics, Computational Biology, Astrophysics, Particle Physics etc. You will be involved in all phases of this process.

You will

  • Identify new applications for Machine Learning in science, engineering, and technology
  • Develop, implement and refine ML techniques
  • Implement parallel ML training on the High Performance Computers
  • Engage in national and international ML/DL communities, most importantly in the Helmholtz AI platform
  • Present research results at scientific meetings, conferences, and as scientific papers
  • Contribute to educational events, such as courses and hackathons
Your Profile
  • Broad knowledge and practical experience in AI and applied Machine Learning is a must
  • Excellent Master and preferably subsequent PhD degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics or similar fields
  • Broad interest in diverse scientific topics
  • Self-motivated personality with a curiosity for working in a multidisciplinary team environment on scientifically challenging problems
  • Hands-on experience with ML/DL workflows and common software libraries
  • Experience with statistical machine learning, including uncertainty quantification, probabilistic modeling, and learning from noisy or incomplete data is a plus
  • Practical experience with High Performance Computing (HPC) systems is an advantage
  • Your experience should be documented in research papers and Open Source code projects
  • Excellent communication skills in written and spoken English with extensive vocabulary are required(at least B2 level according to the CEFR), ideally supported by a certificate confirming the language level. Knowledge of the German language is not mandatory but certainly appreciated
