Job summary

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is seeking an AI Specialist to design, build, and operationalize AI/ML solutions across AWS, GCP, and hybrid environments. You will collaborate with researchers, data scientists, software engineers, cybersecurity, and cloud platform teams to translate complex needs into secure, scalable AI systems.

The role emphasizes responsible AI, governance, and hands-on leadership to move experiments into production while maintaining reusable platforms and best practices

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in information technology, computer science, data science, engineering, or a related field.
• Ten years of increasingly responsible technical experience or equivalent.
• Demonstrated experience designing, building, deploying, and supporting AI/ML solutions in production cloud environments.
• Substantial experience with AWS or GCP AI/ML and data services, and proficiency across both platforms.
• Strong programming skills in Python, plus SQL/Java/R/Scala/PyTorch/TensorFlow etc.
• Experience deploying and maintaining models in production through MLOps/LLMOps with CI/CD, monitoring, and drift detection.
• Experience with Terraform, CloudFormation, AWS CDK, or Google Cloud deployment tooling.
• Understanding cloud architecture including IAM, encryption, observability, cost management.
• Experience integrating cloud services with on-premises systems in a hybrid environment.
• Knowledge of data governance, privacy, cybersecurity, responsible AI, and risk management.

Responsibilities

• Lead end-to-end development and operationalization of AI/ML solutions across AWS, GCP, and hybrid environments.
• Collaborate with researchers, stakeholders, data scientists, software engineers, cybersecurity, and platform teams to translate requirements into scalable AI solutions.
• Design and implement data pipelines, orchestration, model-training environments, evaluation processes, and deployment architectures using cloud-native services.
• Develop generative AI capabilities including retrieval-augmented generation and AI agents.
• Establish MLOps/LLMOps capabilities with versioning, testing, observability, and rollback procedures.
• Create reusable AI platforms, templates, APIs, and shared services for SLAC teams.
