Job summary

Zekelman Industries seeks a skilled Automation Engineer (AGV Specialist) to own programming, commissioning, and optimization of our AGV system across indoor bays, outdoor yards, and building-to-building routes. You will bridge mechanical and software systems to ensure 24/7 reliability and maximize throughput.

Responsibilities include AGV routing, PLC/HMI development, navigation tuning, safety system configuration, and systems integration with MES/WMS/ERP.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a related technical field or equivalent hands‑on industrial experience.
3+ years programming autonomous systems, AGVs, AMRs, or heavy industrial robotic workcells.
Proficiency in PLC languages: Ladder Logic, Structured Text, or Function Block Diagrams.
Experience with industrial communication protocols: EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, Modbus, CAN bus.
Familiarity with LiDAR SLAM, laser triangulation, RTK‑GPS, or magnetic guidance.
Ability to work in a heavy industrial environment (heat, dust, outdoor conditions).

Responsibilities

Program, configure, and optimize AGV routing, traffic control, and dispatch sequencing.
Write/modify PLC code and HMI screens to integrate AGV with mill infrastructure.
Calibrate and troubleshoot navigation systems (LiDAR SLAM, GPS/RTK, magnetic guidance).
Configure safety systems: laser scanners, bumper zones, emergency stops per ISO/ANSI standards.
Integrate AGV software with MES/WMS/ERP via industrial protocols.
Conduct field tests, path validation, and load testing in various conditions.
Create technical documentation, recovery procedures, and operator training.
