Job summary

Zekelman Industries in Chicago seeks an Automation Engineer (AGV Specialist) to own programming, commissioning, and optimization of a large AGV system across indoor bays and outdoor yards. You will bridge software and machinery, ensuring 24/7 reliability and high throughput.

The role requires a 3+ year background in autonomous systems and strong PLC, networking, and navigation skills. This is a full-time position with competitive compensation and benefits.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent hands-on industrial experience.
• 3+ years of experience programming and commissioning autonomous systems, AGVs, AMRs, or heavy industrial robotic workcells.
• Proficiency in PLC languages (Ladder Logic, Structured Text, Function Block Diagrams).
• Experience with industrial protocols: EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, Modbus, CAN bus.

Responsibilities

• Program, configure, and optimize AGV routing, traffic control, and dispatch sequencing.
• Develop PLC code and HMI screens to integrate AGV with plant infrastructure.
• Calibrate navigation systems (LiDAR SLAM, RTK-GPS, magnetic guidance) and troubleshoot sensors.
• Configure safety systems (laser scanners, emergency stops) per ISO/ANSI standards.
• Collaborate with IT/Operations to connect AGV software to MES/WMS/ERP systems.
• Conduct field-testing, path validation, and load testing under varied conditions.
• Create technical documentation and training materials for maintenance technicians.
