Job summary

Virginia Tech seeks a position to support the PVQE program at the center under the peanut extension specialist. Duties include carrying out experimental protocols for land preparation, planting, plot maintenance, harvesting, post‑harvest processing, sample processing, and data collection at on‑center and off‑center sites in Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina.

The role includes organizing and maintaining PVQE facilities and equipment and guiding part-time employees and graduate students

Qualifications

  • Must obtain within one year: Category 10 pesticide applicators license.
  • Must obtain within one year: CDL with Class A endorsement.
  • Must obtain within one year: DOT medical certification.
  • Experience operating field crop research equipment (tractors, sprayers, combines).
  • Experience performing preventive maintenance on equipment.
  • Ability to communicate and plan with the project leader and staff.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out experimental protocols including land preparation, planting, maintenance, harvesting, and post-harvest processing.
  • Collect and record data for on-site and off-site PVQE research sites.
  • Organize and maintain facilities and equipment for the PVQE program.
  • Supervise part-time employees and graduate students within the program.

Job Description

Supports the Peanut Variety and Quality Evaluation (PVQE) program at the center under the leadership of the peanut extension specialist. Duties include carrying out experimental protocols involving land preparation, planting, experimental plot maintenance, harvesting, post-harvest processing, sample processing, data collection and recording for on-center research sites and off-center sites. Off-center sites include locations in Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina as components of a multi-state project. This position is also responsible for organization and upkeep of facilities and equipment assigned to the PVQE program and gives guidance to part-time employees and graduate students working within the program.

Required Qualifications
  • Must have or make progress towards obtaining within one year of employment Category 10 pesticide applicators license.
  • Must have or make progress towards obtaining within one year of employment commercial driver's license with Class A endorsement.
  • Must have or make progress towards obtaining within one year of employment DOT medical certification.
  • Experience operating mechanical equipment such as tractors, planters, sprayer and cultivation equipment, harvest combines, power and hand tools, and other field crop research equipment.
  • Experience performing preventive maintenance on field and research equipment.
  • Experience providing support for research projects and the ability to communicate and plan with the project leader and cooperating staff.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with agronomic field research and pesticide application techniques is preferred.
  • Experience with data entry and Microsoft Windows, Word, and Excel.
