Job summary

The New York City Department of Correction is seeking a Fitness Instructor to support the Applicant Instigation Unit Agility Team. The role focuses on improving wellness, preparing candidates for the NYCD Physical Agility Test, and delivering fitness training for staff in a correctional environment.

Responsibilities include administering the agility test, providing debriefs, tracking progress, and designing trainings to enhance strength, mobility and resilience.

Qualifications

• Certifications in First Aid and CPR issued by American Red Cross or equivalent.
• A Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college in nutrition, exercise physiology, health and fitness or related field, plus 4 years of full-time paid experience (1 year in teaching exercise techniques).
• An Associate degree from an accredited college in nutrition, exercise physiology, health and fitness or related field, plus 6 years of full-time paid experience (1 year in teaching exercise techniques).

Responsibilities

• Perform Candidate Assessment by administering the NYCD Physical Agility Test.
• Verbally communicate Agility Test debrief to candidates and demonstrate proper form.
• Complete Agility Test Stats Report and daily Candidates’ Fitness Progress Report.
• Efficiently assess, design and conduct fitness and wellness trainings to improve strength, endurance, mobility, injury prevention, and stress management.
• Conduct individual and group fitness training for department staff at various locations.
• Handle administrative tasks such as emails, copying, filing and faxing.
• Travel to multiple NYC Department of Correction locations.
