Job summary

The City of Hammond is seeking an AfterschoolTeacher for the Hammond Recreation Center to assist in organizing and operating afterschool activities. You will supervise classroom staff, direct educational and recreational activities onsite and offsite at Zemurray Park, and engage students in safe, fun programming.

The role focuses on academics, recreation, health, and wellness for grades 3–8, including homework support and dinner planning.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in education, Early Childhood Development or a related field.
  • Current Teaching Certificate.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of youth and ability to teach them.
  • At least 2 years' experience working with youth, in a structured program setting.
  • Shall be a person of good character who possesses the health, emotional stability, maturity and strength to carry out assigned duties.
  • Must be able to be present during the entirety of program.

Responsibilities

  • Help students with homework, tutoring, leading and teaching of one or more activity classes of the afterschool program.
  • Physically participating in all activities with youth.
  • Acting as an advisor, counselor, manager of a group of participants.
  • Communicating, enforcing, and adhering to rules and regulations for operation, safety and welfare of participants.
  • Manage classroom in a safe and productive way.
  • Cultivate positive relationships with students, families and fellow staff
  • Reporting to the Recreation Supervisor on activities, participants, plans, programs, problems and needs: recommending action, carrying our policies and objectives of programs.

Job description

The AfterschoolTeacher position is located at the Hammond Recreation Center, responsible for assisting in organization and operation of afterschool activities, supervisingclassroom staff,providing direction in educational and recreational activities onsite and offsite at Zemurray Park, actively participating with the students participating in the program. The afterschool program is designed to provide academic, recreational, and health and wellness activities for children in grades 3 to 8. Theteacher will engage participants in fun activities in a safe environment, as well as enjoyable physical activities, healthy snacks, and a nutritious dinner. Theteacher will also facilitate the completion of homework and assist with tutorial services. Thecandidate must maintain a positive business relationship with other staff members, parents and children. The duties of this position must be performed as a member of a management team reflecting the policy and procedures of the center. Thecandidate must understand and adhere to the center's policy on parent and staff communications maintaining strict confidentiality. It also ensures no preference or prejudice is shown toward certain children over others.
