Job summary

City of Hammond is seeking an Afterschool Staff member to help coordinate activities at the Hammond Recreation Center. You will support educational and recreational programming for 3rd–8th grade students, including homework help, snacks, and a nutritious dinner, with offsite activities at Zemurray Park.

The role emphasizes safe, engaging supervision, leadership, and collaboration with staff, parents, and the public to ensure a positive, structured afterschool experience.

Qualifications

  • Successful completion of 2 years of college, preferably in Elementary Education or related discipline.
  • High School Graduation and sufficient experience working with youth may be substituted.
  • Ability to direct and actively participate in activities with 10 to 15 active children between 6-13 years old; communicate clearly with students, staff, parents and the public.
  • Leadership skills to inspire confidence and enthusiasm in students, parents and staff; make mature safety decisions.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with organization, planning, leading and teaching one or more activity classes for afterschool programs such as STEM, nature study, arts and crafts, sports, games, music, events or field trips.
  • Act as advisor, counselor, and go-to person for the group of participants.
  • Communicate, enforce, and adhere to rules and regulations for operation, safety and welfare of participants.
  • Report to supervisor on activities, participants, plans, programs, problems and needs; recommend actions.
  • Maintain appropriate records and inventories and prepare reports.

Job Description

The Afterschool Staff position is located at the Hammond Recreation Center, responsible for assisting in organization and operation of afterschool activities, providing direction in educational and recreational activities onsite and offsite at Zemurray Park, actively participating with the students participating in the program. The afterschool program is designed to provide academic, recreational, and health and wellness activities for children in grades 3 to 8. The staff will engage participants in fun activities in a safe environment, as well as enjoyable physical activities, healthy snacks, and a nutritious dinner. The staff will also facilitate the completion of homework and assist with tutorial services.

Examples of Duties

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Assisting with organization, planning, leading and teaching of one or more activity classes of the afterschool program including: STEM, nature study, arts and crafts, sports, games, music, special features, events or field trips
  • Acting as advisor, counselor, and go-to person for the group of participants
  • Communicating, enforcing, and adhering to rules and regulations for operation, safety and welfare of participants
  • Reporting to supervisor on activities, participants, plans, programs, problems and needs:
  • Recommending action, carrying our policies and objectives of programs

Maintaining appropriate records, inventories, making reports

Typical Qualifications

Education Required:Successful completion of 2 years of college, preferably in Elementary Education or related discipline desired; High School Graduation and sufficient experience working with youth may be substituted. Other:Ability to direct and actively participate in activities with 10 to 15 active children between 6-13 years old; Ability to communicate clear and concisely work with students, staff, parents, and general public;Leadership skills to include the ability to inspire confidence and enthusiasm to the students, parents, and other after school teachers and staff members;Ability to make mature decisions affecting the safety and well-being of children;Skilled and active participation in varied educational and recreational activities.

Supplemental Information

Must be present during the entire after-school program, from Sept 2026– May, 2027. The program meets weekly: Monday–Thursday from 3:00 pm – 5:30 pm and on Friday from 3:00 pm – 5:30 pm.
