Job summary

The YMCA of Greater Birmingham is seeking part-time Afterschool Counselors to support children after school in Hoover, AL. Staff supervise and engage groups, providing a safe, fun environment with a varied activity schedule.

The role runs Monday through Friday from school dismissal until 6:00 p.m. at multiple school sites in the Hoover area. Candidates should be at least 18, pass background checks, and hold CPR/First Aid certification; training is provided.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 18 years old.
• Background and Child Abuse & Neglect screening completed.
• CPR/First Aid Certification (training provided if needed).
• Must be available Monday-Friday from school dismissal to 6:00 p.m. on school days.
• Willing to have FUN and PLAY at work.
• Attend regular in-service training.
• Adhere to YMCA standards of service.
• Complete all required online training.

Responsibilities

• Engages and supervises a group of children. Program hours are Monday - Friday from school dismissal (varies per site) to 6:00 pm.
• Plans and implements program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate, and consistent with YMCA core curriculum components.
• Adheres to program standards, including safety and cleanliness standards.
• Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention, and emergencies.
• Maintains positive relations with parents and other staff. Models relationship-building skills in all interactions.
• Attends all staff meetings and required training programs.
• Other duties and responsibilities assigned by the supervisor.
