Job summary

YMCA of Greater Charlotte in Matthews, NC seeks a Lead Afterschool Counselor to guide and support staff, ensure a safe and engaging environment, and maintain strong parent communication. Responsibilities include mentoring counselors, planning activities, and upholding YMCA safety protocols in a part-time role.

The position emphasizes leadership, inclusion, and program quality, with required CPR/First Aid/AED and a willingness to obtain certifications within 30 days.

Qualifications

• Must be 18+ years old.
• Prior experience with children or in a leadership role preferred (training provided).
• Strong communication and leadership skills; ability to mentor staff.
• Ability to manage conflicts professionally among children and staff.
• CPR, First Aid, and AED certification (or willingness to obtain within 30 days).
• Ability to communicate with parents; organized and proactive; strong problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead and support a team of afterschool counselors, ensuring consistent programming and supervision.
• Train, mentor, and provide ongoing support to counselors to improve program quality.
• Oversee daily program operations, ensuring activities meet YMCA standards.
• Communicate with parents and guardians, update and partner with families.
• Resolve conflicts among participants and staff using positive behavior approaches.
• Ensure safety procedures, supervision ratios, and emergency protocols are followed.
• Plan and lead arts, sports, and enrichment activities; monitor staff performance.
