Job summary

The YMCA of Greater Montgomery in Enterprise, AL is hiring an after-school counselor to supervise and engage children in a structured program. Under the Site Director, you will help plan daily activities, supervise groups, and maintain a safe environment during after-school hours.

The role requires being at least 17 years old with relevant experience or current professional preparation to lead young children, plus certifications within 30 days of hire.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 17 years old and preparing to lead young children or have experience with elementary age children.
• Willing to fulfill counselor responsibilities per YMCA philosophy and goals.
• Required certifications within 30 days of hire: CPR, First Aid and AED, and Child Abuse Prevention/Bloodborne Pathogens.

Responsibilities

• Assist in planning and implementing the daily program under Site Director guidance.
• Supervise and interact with a specific group of children with professional attitude.
• Plan, implement and participate in scheduled activities (lesson plans, sports, crafts, etc.).
• Ensure safety of program participants at all times.
• Establish and maintain positive relationships with parents, participants and staff.
• Assist with general site maintenance and housekeeping tasks as needed.
• Attend mandatory staff meetings and trainings and complete required documentation.

Under the direction and supervision of the Site Director, the counselor is expected to supervise, manage and interact with the children registered in the afterschool program.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Assist in planning and implementing the daily program under the direction of the Site Director.
• Supervise and interact with a specific group of children while maintaining a professional attitude and loyalty to the YMCA.
• To plan, implement and participate in all scheduled activities including, but not limited to, weekly lesson plans, sports, games, crafts, etc.
• Be responsible for the safety of program participants at all times.
• Establish and maintain positive relationships with parents, program participants and other staff.
• Assist with general site maintenance.
• Attend all mandatory staff meetings and training programs.
• To complete all required documentation for the program.
• Responsible for maintenance and care of equipment and supplies.
• To help with housekeeping tasks as necessary.
• Arrive at the site and be ready to work by the scheduled work time.
• May substitute at a program site and perform any other added responsibilities as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Must be at least 17 years old, undergoing professional preparation to be a leader of young children or having experience with elementary age children. Must be willing to fulfill the counselor’s responsibilities in accordance with the YMCA’s philosophy and goals.

Required Certifications and Trainings:

• CPR, First Aid and AED or within 30 days of hire
• Child Abuse Prevention, Bloodborne Pathogens within 30 days of hire
