Job summary

KIPP Public Schools Northern California is seeking an After School Teacher/Instructor to work with 60-80 students after school on site at a KIPP Middle School. The role emphasizes leadership, patience, and strong communication to support homework help, academics, and enrichment activities throughout the school year.

The schedule runs 3:30pm–6:00pm on most days, with a Wednesday 2:00pm–6:00pm session; the position is part-time and non-exempt.

Qualifications

• 1–2 years of youth development or related experience.
• Minimum education as listed: HS diploma or equivalent; either AA or BA or 48 college units; or testing via ParaPro/CBEST.
• Strong communication and ability to work with diverse youth.

Responsibilities

• Deliver after-school activities in core program areas.
• Document schedules, lesson plans, and youth participation.
• Use positive behavior management with children.
• Track student attendance daily.
• Assist with program registration, customer service, and outreach.
• Maintain health and safety standards at all times.
• Support setup and cleanup of activities.

Position Summary

The After School Teacher/Instructor will work directly with a group of 60-80 students, providing homework assistance, academic support and enrichment activities after school on site at a KIPP Middle School. Program leaders’ ability to establish authority through leadership, communication, and most importantly patience, is essential to success. Must be able to commit to working throughout the entire school year.

Schedule

3:30pm-6:00pm, Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and 2:00pm-6:00pm on Wednesdays.

Reports to

Extended Learning Opportunity Program Director.

Qualifications

Experience: A minimum of 1-2 years work experience in a youth development organization planning and supervising activities based on the developmental needs of young people, or equivalent experience.

Education/certifications:

• Title I After school instructors whose duties include instructional support must have:
• High school diploma or the equivalent, and
• A.A. degree or
• B.A. degree (or minimum 48 units in process) or
• Pass the ETS ParaPro Assessment (passing score = 460) or
• Pass the CBEST Exams

Knowledge/skills required:

• Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
• Ability to deal effectively with youth from diverse backgrounds, including discipline problems.
• Demonstrated ability working with young people, parents and community leaders.
• Have proficient knowledge of Google Suite applications (Google Classroom, Hangout, Docs, Sheets, Slides, etc.)

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

• Implement after school activities within assigned core program areas, including academic assistance, homework club, fitness/recreation, arts, and enrichment activities.
• Assist in documenting program schedules, lesson plans, curriculum, youth participation and outcomes.
• Use positive behavior and classroom management techniques with children.
• Accurately track student attendance (sign-in/sign-out sheets) on a daily basis.
• Assist with after school program registration, customer service, and community outreach.
• Maintain high standards of health and safety to ensure the safety of students, staff members and others.
• Participate in all after school activities including preparation, set-up, take-down and clean-up to ensure facility cleanliness.
• Communicate and work effectively with students, staff, parents, school personnel, and community partners.

Physical

Ability to navigate school and classroom settings. Ability to access and utilize technology. Occasional lifting/carrying of equipment 1-35 lbs. Physical agility to move self in various positions in order to execute duties effectively, which may include frequent kneeling, walking, pushing/pulling, squatting, twisting, turning, bending, stooping and reaching overhead.

Mental

Stress of deadlines and normal work standards, ability to analyze problems and generate alternatives, work with interruptions, concentrate for long periods of time, read, calculate, perform routine math problems, memorize and recall objects and people.

Environmental

School and in-person classroom environment subject to constant interruptions and distractions. Adhere to KIPP’s health and safety guidelines as outlined by the CDC, CDE, and public health agencies’ recommendations.

Classification and Schedule

• Part time, non-exempt school based position on school calendar. Approximately 10 hours/week, M,T,TH,F 3:30PM- 6:00PM and W 2:00PM-6PM
• Depending on school need and availability, this role could include an optional 6-week Summer Extension (20-40 hours/week).

• 10 month Standard Compensation (10 hours/week) - $20.92 - $24.84/hour based on experience.
• Depending on school need and availability, this role could include an optional 6-week Summer Extension (20-40 hours/week). Compensation for this period would be $30.00/hour.
