Job description

Implements instructional and developmentally appropriate programs for young children within the Early Childhood Programs in compliance with established state and national accreditation and licensing standards.

Duties
  • Develops and maintains quality programming by implementing program policies, procedures, and standards to support the overall goals and mission of the School of Education, Early Childhood Programs and the University.
  • Builds respectful relationships with children, families, staff, and community. Establishes communication between school management, ECP, and students.
  • Supervises and maintains health, safety, and curriculum standards for compliance with all established state licensing and national accreditation requirements. Assists in evaluating program effectiveness through setting and reviewing the goals and objectives and adheres to the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) Code of Ethical Conduct.
  • Manages the daily operation of the site. Plans and conducts weekly staff meetings and individual classroom consultations. Collaborates with University departments to support student interest and enrichment opportunities coursework. Develops and delivers orientation for the site. Plans after‑school programs to cater to the individual needs of the students enrolled in the program.
  • Schedules site visits, prepares assessment tools, and gathers and analyzes data for continuous program improvement. Uses assessment tools to collect and analyze data for all aspects of the program, to inform decision making to improve program quality.
  • Facilitates and provides opportunities for family participation within the program to continue to meet the growing needs of families and professionals working with young children.
  • Implements projects and programs to accomplish goals and retain high quality program design. Maintains cleanliness of all program areas.
  • Manages resources to align cost with budget priorities and assesses the need for supplies and equipment, identifies best vendors to ensure durability and age appropriateness of purchases and places orders.
  • Plans after‑school programs to cater to the individual needs of the students enrolled in the program. Maintains records of students enrolled in the after‑school program in a confidential manner.
  • Implements emergency procedures when necessary.
  • Provides a broad range of administrative and supervisory functions. Supervises assigned staff in accordance with WNMU personnel practices including recruitment, training, performance evaluation, guidance, etc. Participates in the process of ongoing personal and professional development. Maintains comprehensive communication among all contacts (internal and external). Models professional standards and ethics in accordance with WNMU philosophy.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Education / Background

Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education or closely related field required. Experience in administration, leadership, and/or management preferred. Bilingual (Spanish) preferred.

Job Knowledge

Knowledge of age‑appropriate activities, interests and behaviors; knowledge of proper handling procedures for food; knowledge of the principles and practices for emergent curriculum development specific to early childhood education; ability to implement the vision, mission, philosophy of the Early Childhood Programs; knowledge of curriculums and principles, practices, and techniques for development of lesson plans specific to early childhood education. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with young children, staff, and parents; skill in working effectively in an environment subject to noise, frequent exposure to contagious diseases, interruptions and quickly changing priorities; skill in quickly responding to dynamic situations utilizing effective communication and appropriate intervention methods to maintain classroom management; skill in working with young children to help them complete activities and remain focused on assigned activities; skill in working on an individual basis with children with special needs; skills in guiding classroom assistants to ensure appropriate classroom management.

Working Conditions / Physical Demands

Normal classroom environment. May be required to lift, push, and pull office equipment and materials. Must be able to stoop, bend, squat, sit on floor and ambulate over uneven floor surfaces including stairs and steps. Must be able to visually and audibly assess situations to ensure health and safety. Work involves moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises. Light maintenance such as shoveling, sweeping, mopping, throwing of trash, and others may be needed. May be required to work additional hours or days depending on circumstances.

Western New Mexico University is a state‑funded university. As such, all positions are dependent on state appropriations and available funding sources.

Other Requirements

Certification in First Aid/CPR is required.
