Chapman University is seeking an enthusiastic After-School Mentor under the Federal Work-Study program. The role is based at the Orange Campus with opportunities in Buena Park.

You will support children in an after-school setting, focusing on safety, engagement, and learning, while building positive relationships with students and staff. Qualified candidates are FWS-eligible, patient, dependable, and able to work both independently and as part of a team.

Qualifications

  • Must be eligible for Federal Work-Study through their college or university.
  • Excited to work with children and make a positive impact in their lives.

  • Comfortable working with children in a classroom setting.
  • Able to work independently while also being part of a team.
  • Previous experience working with children is helpful but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the program facilitator with day-to-day activities of the after-school program.
  • Help maintain an organized, safe, and welcoming classroom environment.
  • Work with children one-on-one to provide support and encouragement.
  • Assist children with activities and assignments as directed by the facilitator.
  • Encourage positive behavior and participation in classroom activities.
  • Build positive and appropriate relationships with children in the program.
  • Help with classroom setup and cleanup.
  • Follow all Friendly Center and program safety guidelines.
  • Communicate with the program facilitator and Friendly Center staff regarding any questions or concerns.
  • Assist with other program-related tasks as needed.

Anticipated Pay Range

Pay Range Information

Chapman University is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this position. This range takes into account a variety of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. Salary offers are determined based on the final candidate’s qualifications and experience, as well as internal equity and other internal factors. After-School Mentor

Friendly Center is looking for an enthusiastic and dependable Federal Work-Study student to serve as an After-School Mentor. Our after-school program is offered in partnership with a local community organization and provides children with a safe and supportive environment to learn, grow, and build positive relationships. The After-School Mentor will work alongside the program facilitator to help keep the classroom organized and provide one-on-one support to children throughout the program. Mentors will have the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with the children while encouraging them and helping them feel supported. Previous experience working with children is not required. We are looking for someone who is patient, positive, dependable, and excited to work with children.

What You'll Gain

This position provides students with hands-on experience working with children in an after-school setting while developing skills in communication, leadership, teamwork, and mentoring. Students will have the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with children and gain experience working alongside a community partner in a nonprofit environment.

Schedule Requirements

Mentors are expected to be available for the duration of the program, from September 15 through December 8. Consistent attendance is important because it allows mentors to build a good rapport and positive relationship with the children in the program.

Students should be available to work Tuesdays from 2:00 PM-5:30 PM. The first Thursday of the month from 10:30 AM-12:30 PM would also be available.

  • Conversational Spanish a plus.
  • General Education background a plus.
