Job summary

The Piedmont YMCA in Charlottesville, VA, is seeking a Lead Inclusion Counselor for the After School Program. You will support a group of elementary-aged children, including those with disabilities, ensuring a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment aligned with YMCA values.

Under the direction of the Site Supervisor, you will adapt activities, lead enrichment and homework support, model positive behavior, and collaborate with families and staff to promote development and well-being.

Qualifications

• Meets educational and experience qualifications established by the Virginia Department of Education.
• At least 18 years of age.
• Six months experience in a supervised child program; one year in a developmental setting preferred.
• At least 6 months experience working with or volunteering with individuals with disabilities.
• Ability to plan, organize and implement age-appropriate/developmentally appropriate program activities.
• Previous experience with individuals with disabilities.
• Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds.
• Participation in required in-service training (24 hours) annually.
• Completion of all required trainings prior to start date.
• First Aid & CPR and MAT certifications within the first 30 days.
• Must pass background check and receive negative TB result before beginning work.

Responsibilities

• Work between 1:45pm-5:30pm, Monday-Friday.
• Review Inclusion Intake forms and collaborate with guardians.
• Create and implement daily enrichment activities inclusive for all.
• Adapt plans to fit each student’s needs.
• Model disability sensitivity and behavior management for staff.
• Create schedules, visuals, and reward systems for students.
• Maintain safety, cleanliness, and program standards.
• Supervise children, classroom, and activities.
• Foster inclusive environment and positive relationships with youth.
• Communicate with families about needs and progress; connect to Y.
• Ensure compliance with Virginia licensing standards.
• Attend program activities and team meetings.
• Uphold YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect, responsibility.
• Pursue skill updates through workshops and professional groups.
• Engage guardians in conversations about discipline or behavior.
• Support staff relations with parents and families via open communication.
• Maintain equipment and supplies; coordinate with Adaptive Program Director.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
