Job summary

The YMCA of the Lowcountry is seeking an Afterschool Counselor to provide fun, safe, and engaging after-school programs for students. You will support homework in math and literacy, and lead enrichment activities including STEM while promoting healthy living and well-being within a safe environment.

Responsibilities include supervising children, co-planning activities aligned with YMCA values, and ensuring health and safety standards. Strong communication with families and staff is essential.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required; bachelor’s degree preferred.
• Completion of, or enrollment in, an early childhood education program is preferred.
• Experience working with elementary-aged children in a state-accredited childcare setting.

Responsibilities

• Supervise and engage a group of children to ensure a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment.
• Co-plan and implement activities developmentally appropriate and aligned with YMCA values.
• Adheres to health, safety, and cleanliness requirements.
• Attend required staff meetings and trainings including abuse risk management and youth safety training.
• Follow YMCA policies and procedures including medical needs and behavior management.
• Build and maintain positive relationships with parents/guardians and staff; model strong communication skills.
