Job summary

Malcolm X College is seeking adjunct instructors to teach African American Studies in the Social Studies Department. The role focuses on designing courses, engaging students, and fostering critical thinking in a diverse urban college environment.

The ideal candidate will hold a Master’s degree in African American Studies or related field, have experience with Brightspace or similar LMS, and be adept at online and in-person instruction.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or higher in African American Studies or related discipline.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to communicate with diverse group of staff and students.
  • Knowledge of Brightspace or similar LMS; online teaching experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Design courses to meet learning outcomes and promote students’ active participation in their own learning.
  • Create an effective learning environment that fosters intellectual curiosity and helps students to problem solve.
  • Employ formative and summative assessments to ensure learning outcomes are met.
  • Maintain attendance records and submit student grades; hold weekly conference time.
  • Lead in department initiatives and promote collaboration among faculty and students.
  • Present instruction aligned with approved course syllabi and standards.

SOCIAL STUDIES DEPARTMENT
MALCOLM X COLLEGE

Malcolm X College is currently seeking adjunct instructors to teachAfrican American Studies. The Social Sciences Department empowers students to become lifelong learners and critical thinkers by developing their analytical skills, teaching from a global perspective and promoting creative problem-solving skills.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
  • Design courses to meet learning outcomes and promote students’ active participation in their own learning.
  • Create an effective learning environment that fosters students’intellectual curiosity and helps students to problem solve using discipline-specific thinking strategies.
  • Employ a variety of formative and summative assessments to ensure that classroom instruction leads to student learning and the attainment of the student learning outcomes for the course.
  • Help students reach their academic, personal and career goals and foster a safe environment that respects the diversity of people and ideas by modeling respect for all students and conveying confidence in every student’s ability to learn.
  • Contribute to and provide leadership in the student’s academic and professional communities and promote collaboration and teamwork among members of these communities.
  • Present effective instruction to students based upon approved course syllabi.
  • Assess and grade students based upon legitimate assessment factors.
  • Maintain and submit student attendance records and student grades.
  • Hold one hour of student conference time per week for every course section taught.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master’s degree or higher in African American Studies or related discipline.
  • Knowledge of Brightspace Learning Management System or similar Learning Management System, preferred
  • Prior experience with online teaching (via Zoom) and/or online teaching certification is strongly preferred
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to communicate with diverse group of staff and students, required
  • Experience with a diverse, multi-lingual student population is desired, as is a commitment to the open access mission of the community college

Salary Range: $58,000 - $65,000

Offered salary will be determined by the respective collective bargaining agreement and applicant's education.
