Job summary

Northrop Grumman invites motivated students to join the Mission Systems NIC division in McClellan, CA as an internship focused on mechanical engineering for navigation and mission-support hardware. You will assist in design, analysis, and prototyping to validate concepts and prepare for production.

You will collaborate with engineers to conduct tests, document designs, and support integration with avionics and software teams.

Qualifications

• Enrollment as a full-time student and will be enrolled Fall 2027.
• Major in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related STEM.
• Available to work full-time (40 hrs/week) for at least 10 weeks during Summer 2027.
• Able to obtain and maintain U.S. Government security clearance; U.S. citizenship required.

Responsibilities

• Assist senior mechanical engineers in NIC division to design, analyze, and iterate on navigation and mission-support hardware components.
• Perform dimensional, material, and vibration analyses using SolidWorks, ANSYS, and MATLAB/Simulink.
• Participate in rapid prototyping, 3-D printing, and CNC machining to fabricate test articles and validate design concepts.
• Conduct laboratory testing including thermal, environmental, and structural tests to verify compliance with aerospace and defense standards.
• Compile detailed design documentation, BOM, and assembly instructions for internal review and production packaging.
• Support hardware integration with avionics and software teams, ensuring mechanical interfaces meet safety requirements.
• Contribute to cost, schedule, and risk assessments as part of the engineering project lifecycle.
• Engage in design reviews and refine models based on peer comments and test results.
