Job summary

Northrop Grumman is seeking Mechanical Engineers for an internship in the Mission Systems NIC division, located at McClellan CA. The role involves assisting with design, analysis, and hardware integration for navigation and mission-support components.

The candidate should be a full-time student in Mechanical or Aerospace fields, able to work 40 hours for at least 10 weeks in Summer 2027 and capable of obtaining a U.S. security clearance.

Qualifications

• Be a student enrolled full-time pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree and will be enrolled Fall 2027.
• Majoring in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a closely related STEM degree.
• Be available to work full-time (40 hours per week) for at least 10 weeks during summer 2027.
• Be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government security clearance (U.S. citizenship is a pre-requisite)

Responsibilities

• Assist senior mechanical engineers in the NIC division to design, analyze, and iterate on navigation and mission‑support hardware components.
• Perform dimensional, material, and vibration analyses using SolidWorks, ANSYS, and MATLAB/Simulink.
• Participate in rapid prototyping activities, 3‑D printing, and CNC machining to fabricate test articles and validate design concepts.
• Conduct laboratory testing, including thermal, environmental, and structural tests, to verify compliance with aerospace and defense standards.
• Compile detailed design documentation, BOM, and assembly instructions for internal review and production packaging.
• Support hardware integration efforts with avionics and software teams, ensuring mechanical interfaces meet functional and safety requirements.
• Contribute to cost, schedule, and risk assessments as part of the engineering project life cycle.
• Engage in design reviews, provide constructive feedback, and refine models based on peer comments and test results.
