Job summary

Spirit AeroSystems, Inc. in Wichita, Kansas is seeking a Crane Inspector to perform inspections, testing, and condition assessments of overhead cranes, hoists, and related equipment to ensure safe, reliable operation.

You will document findings, coordinate corrective actions, and support maintenance and reliability programs. The role requires experience with overhead cranes, the ability to read mechanical drawings, knowledge of crane components, and willingness to work at heights.

Qualifications

  • Experience inspecting, maintaining, troubleshooting, repairing, or operating industrial overhead cranes, hoists, or similar material-handling equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, schematics, equipment manuals, specifications, and technical documentation.
  • Knowledge of mechanical crane components and lifting systems.
  • Ability to identify equipment defects, wear, damage, and unsafe operating conditions.
  • Ability to accurately document inspection findings and communicate technical issues.
  • Ability to work at heights and access crane bridges, runways, platforms, and elevated equipment.
  • Ability to perform physical activities including climbing, bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, and standing for extended periods.

Responsibilities

  • Perform scheduled, periodic, and special inspections of overhead cranes, hoists, monorails, jib cranes, and associated lifting equipment.
  • Inspect mechanical components including wire rope, chains, hooks, sheaves, drums, brakes, couplings, wheels, gears, bearings, and structural components.
  • Inspect crane bridges, trolleys, runway rails, end stops, expansion joints, and related supporting systems.
  • Inspect below-the-hook lifting devices and associated rigging equipment as required.
  • Perform functional and operational tests of cranes and hoists to verify proper operation of controls, brakes, limit switches, emergency stops, warning devices, and safety systems.
  • Perform or support required load testing and return-to-service inspections following repairs, modifications, or installation.
  • Identify worn, damaged, defective, or non-compliant equipment and remove or recommend equipment for removal from service when appropriate.
  • Document inspection findings, deficiencies, corrective actions, and equipment status in applicable maintenance or computerized maintenance management systems.
  • Review equipment manuals, drawings, schematics, specifications, technical documents, and inspection criteria.
  • Coordinate with Maintenance, Engineering, Operations, Environment Health & Safety, equipment manufacturers, vendors, and contractors to resolve crane-related deficiencies.
  • Verify completed repairs and corrective actions prior to returning equipment to service.
  • Support preventive and predictive maintenance activities and provide recommendations to improve crane reliability and equipment life.
  • Maintain inspection records and documentation necessary to demonstrate compliance with company requirements and applicable regulatory and industry standards.
  • Ensure crane and lifting equipment complies with applicable OSHA requirements, ASME B30 standards, manufacturer requirements, and company procedures.
  • Immediately communicate unsafe conditions or equipment requiring corrective action.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives related to crane safety, reliability, inspection processes, and preventative maintenance.
