Beacon Health System in Kalamazoo, MI is hiring an Aerobic Instructor II to lead high-quality group exercise classes under the Fitness Promotions Manager. The role requires certification as a Group Exercise Instructor (AFAA) with additional certs (ACE/ACSM/AEA/USWFA) and at least three years of experience designing and teaching aerobics classes.

About Beacon Kalamazoo

Beacon Kalamazoo provides 24/7 emergency care and a Level II Trauma Center. We deliver care for serious life-threatening injuries/illnesses, and your everyday health needs, including labor and delivery. We offer specialty care for heart/vascular disease, lung and sleep disorders, mental health conditions, and women’s health. We offer a wide range of outpatient services, including diagnostic imaging, lab tests, respiratorytherapyand rehabilitation therapy services

What You’ll Do

An Aerobic Instructor II reports to the Fitness Promotions Manager. Under the guidance of the Group Exercise Coordinator, is responsible for conducting quality group exercise classes.

Aerobic Instructor II Job Responsibilities:
  • Arrive early and staying after classes to answer any questions.
  • Select safe, effective and appropriate exercises; analyze clients’ exercises and offering modifications as necessary.
  • Follow the scheduled class format and maintaining the proper intensity level.
  • Select appropriate music speed and type.
  • Cue movements and patterns so that the client can successfully perform movements in a smooth and continuous manner.
  • Demonstrate a genuine interest in, and dedication to, improving the health and fitness of clients.
  • Change class routine, a minimum of every 4-6 weeks, unless following guidelines of a licensed program.
  • Assist with class coverage in all Beacon Health & Fitness locations.
  • Pick up the exercise area before and after class.
  • Assist the Group Exercise Coordinator in the development of new classes, in all BH&F locations.
  • Be supportive of other instructors, clients and the H&LC staff in general.
  • Remain familiar with and support BH&F programs, special events, membership promotions and other events.
  • Attend mandatory BH&F meetings and training sessions.
  • Remain knowledgeable of and abiding by Beacon Health & Fitness substitution policies; minimizing the use of substitutes.
  • Receive complaints, comments and/or suggestions from clients and promptly taking appropriate action.
  • Complete other job-related duties and projects assigned.
Organizational Responsibilities
  • Attend and participate in department meetings and is accountable for all information shared.
  • Complete mandatory education, annual competencies and department specific education within established timeframes.
  • Complete annual employee health requirements within established timeframes.
  • Maintain license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.
  • Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department.
  • Utilize appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
  • Adhere to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.
  • Comply with established organization and department policies.
  • Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.
What You Bring

The ideal candidate will have a high school diploma or equivalent. You will certification through the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA) as a Group Exercise Instructor is required. You must have additional certification with the American Council on Exercise (ACE), or American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), or Aquatic Exercise Association (AEA), or United States Water Fitness Association (USWFA) or similar approved certification/training is required to teach specific aerobics classes. You will have a minimum of three years of work experience as an aerobics instructor with experience designing and teaching aerobics classes is required.

Required Qualifications
  • Successful completion of a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Certification through the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA) as a Group Exercise Instructor is required. Additional certification with the American Council on Exercise (ACE), or American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), or Aquatic Exercise Association (AEA), or United States Water Fitness Association (USWFA) or similar approved certification/training is required.
  • A minimum of three years of work experience as an aerobics instructor with experience designing and teaching aerobics classes is required.
Knowledge & Skills
  • Requires the technical knowledge and application of basic exercise physiology and anatomy to adults and children if applicable.
  • Requires knowledge of aerobic exercises for clients.
  • Demonstrates the leadership, interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written) necessary to interact effectively with a diverse group of clients, staff, members and facility users in a professional, courteous, friendly and sincere manner.
  • Requires CPR certification or arrangements to be certified within the first three months of employment as an aerobics instructor.
Working Conditions
  • Work in an athletic club environment.
  • May be exposed to frequent interruptions, the potential of increased noise levels and some discomfort due to cool or warm temperatures.
  • Requires the ability to work flexible hours.
