Job summary

Sylvania is seeking a High School Student Council Advisor to guide elected student leaders as they organize school events and develop leadership skills. This role fosters an inclusive, democratic environment with strong emphasis on civic literacy, organizational skills, and financial literacy.

The advisor provides guardrails, administrative backing, and logistics while supporting students in ownership of their initiatives and in building a positive school culture.

Qualifications

  • Strong organizational skills, financial management competence, conflict resolution, and excellent communication.
  • Before or after school meetings with student council leaders along with nights or weekends for event supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Train elected officers and representatives in meeting procedures, project management, and public speaking.
  • Facilitate regular council meetings (once a month), ensuring students lead the agenda and record detailed minutes.
  • Mentor students through interpersonal conflicts, team-building exercises, and ethical decision-making.
  • Promote student council initiatives to the wider community and encourage a culture of school spirit and inclusivity.
  • Oversee the student-led planning, budgeting, and execution of major school events (e.g., Homecoming, Snow Week, pep rallies, and dances).
  • Coordinate event logistics, scheduling/reservations, purchasing items, custodial requests, etc.
  • Act as the primary chaperone or coordinate faculty chaperones for all council-sponsored activities.
  • Assist the student leaders with managing the budget and financial accounts in compliance with school district policies.
  • Supervise all fundraising initiatives and ensure proper accounting for cash collection, purchase orders, and deposits.
  • Maintain the council’s constitution and bylaws, ensuring election processes are fair, transparent, and democratic.

Job Summary

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Student Leadership Development:

  • Event Coordination & Supervision:

    • Assist the student leaders with managing the budget and financial accounts in compliance with school district policies.

    • Maintain the council’s constitution and bylaws, ensuring election processes are fair, transparent, and democratic.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong organizational skills, financial management competence, conflict resolution, and excellent communication will be needed to as an advisor.

Education/Certification Requirements
  • Current employment within the school district (preferred for internal stipend positions).
Physical Requirements

This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing, frequently requires standing, walking, sitting and using hands to finger, handle or feel and occasionally requires stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, pushing or pulling and lifting; work requires close vision and distance vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires observing general surroundings and activities; work occasionally requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment and Exposure to bodily fluids; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
