Job summary

Phillips 66 is seeking an Advisor II, Product Control in Houston to independently execute daily and monthly product control activities for assigned books, improving P&L transparency and reporting quality.

The role requires deep knowledge of commodity valuation, trade lifecycle, and control processes, with opportunities to mentor teammates and lead process improvements across Trading, Front Office, Operations, Risk, FP&A, and Accounting.

Qualifications

  • Legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Engineering, Math, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of experience in product control, middle office, finance, accounting, or a related field.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  • Intermediate proficiency in PowerBI.
  • Strong quantitative, critical reasoning, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to investigate variances and work through moderately complex issues with limited oversight.
  • Strong attention to detail and clear communication with technical and nontechnical stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare timely and accurate exposure and P&L reporting for assigned books or portfolios with increasing independence.
  • Perform daily and monthly product control activities, including P&L explained, value at risk, and drawdown analysis; investigate variances.
  • Interpret position, exposure, and valuation data; challenge assumptions and identify issues affecting trade capture, valuation, settlements, or reporting accuracy.
  • Partner with Trading or Front Office, Operations, Risk, FP&A, and Accounting to investigate and resolve issues and align reporting outcomes.
  • Support month-end close and mark-to-market to GAAP processes for assigned areas.

As the Advisor II, Product Control, you’ll independently execute daily and monthly product control activities for assigned books or portfolios while strengthening the quality, accuracy, and transparency of P&L and risk reporting. This role is best suited for someone who can manage routine and moderately complex deliverables, investigate variances with sound judgment, and collaborate effectively across Trading, Front Office, Operations, Risk, FP&A, and Accounting.

You’ll apply a solid understanding of commodity valuation, trade lifecycle activity, settlements, and control processes to resolve issues, communicate insights, recommend improvements, and elevate complex exceptions appropriately. You’ll also serve as a knowledgeable resource to less experienced team members and contribute to initiatives that improve reporting quality and control effectiveness.

What You’ll Do
  • Prepare timely and accurate exposure and profit and loss reporting for assigned books or portfolios with increasing independence and accountability.
  • Perform daily and monthly product control activities, including P&L explained, value at risk, and drawdown analysis; investigate material and moderately complex variances.
  • Interpret position, exposure, and valuation data; challenge assumptions and identify issues affecting trade capture, valuation, settlements, or reporting accuracy.
  • Partner with Trading or Front Office, Operations, Risk, FP&A, and Accounting to investigate and resolve issues and align reporting outcomes.
  • Support month-end close and mark-to-market to GAAP processes for assigned areas, including the preparation of appropriate control support and audit evidence.
  • Apply working knowledge of commodity valuation concepts and trade lifecycle activity to explain results, identify trends, and escalated complex valuation or methodology questions.
  • Contribute to process improvements that increase efficiency, control effectiveness, reporting clarity, or stakeholder transparency; lead smaller improvements as appropriate.
  • Share technical knowledge, provide informal guidance to less experienced analysts, and contribute to team capability development.
  • Continue professional development while building broader commercial, systems, and cross-functional knowledge.
What You’ll Bring – Required
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States
  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Engineering, Math, or a related field
  • 3 or more years of experience in product control, middle office, finance, accounting, or a related field
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel
  • Intermediate proficiency in PowerBI
  • Strong quantitative, critical reasoning, and problem-solving skills, including the ability to investigate variances, challenge assumptions, and work through moderately complex issues with limited oversight
  • Strong attention to detail and communication skills, with the ability to explain financial and risk information clearly to technical and nontechnical stakeholders
What Makes You Stand Out – Preferred
  • Experience in a market risk or energy commodity trading environment, especially in Renewables
  • Experience with ETRM platforms such as Openlink, Endur, Allegro, or SAP
  • working knowledge of ETRM systems, trade lifecycle activity, settlements, and accounting Rightangle, Openlink
  • Understanding of commodity valuation concepts such as basis, location spreads, and storage
  • Basic to intermediate SQL, VBA, or Python skills for data modeling, reporting, or variance analysis
  • Experience with Power BI or similar visualization and reporting tools
  • Knowledge of options, Greeks, storage valuation, or other advanced commodity valuation concepts
  • Experience partnering with Market Risk on value at risk or stress-testing methodology, or supporting audit evidence and remediation activities
  • Professional certifications such as FRM or CFA
Compensation Range

This position has a base salary range of $108,900 – $133,100.
