Responsibilities include post-op check-ins, assisting with clinic procedures, inpatient and some outpatient procedures, and robust collaboration with RNs and surgeons.

Qualifications

• Board-certified Surgical Physician Assistant with CA licensure and DEA.
• Experience in neurosurgery or cranial patient care.
• Proficient in inpatient/outpatient management and post-op checks.

Responsibilities

• Support neurosurgery team including RNs, surgeons, and APPs.
• Manage 8–12 adult patients daily with 75% inpatient work.
• Conduct post-op check-ins and occasional solo visits.
• Assist with clinic procedures as needed.
• Perform inpatient procedures (drains, LPs) and outpatient stitches/shunts.
• Respond to patient messages with RN support, document in Epic EMR.
• Maintain pre/post-op care focus and skull/cranial surgery experience.

Job Title: Surgical Physician Assistant (SPA)

Location: San Francisco, California

Schedule: 8:00AM - 5:00PM x 5

Term: 26-week assignment with the potential for extension

Pay Rate: $156 - $168/hr

Astrya Global, a San Diego based medical staffing agency, is hiring a Surgical Physician Assistant (SPA) for a temporary assignment in San Francisco, California. These positions are 26-week contracts with the ability to extend.

Responsibilities for a Surgical Physician Assistant (SPA):

• Support staff including RNs, MAs, Surgeons, and additional APPs in a neurosurgery department focusing primarily on cranial patients
• Manage a patient load ranging from 8-12 patients per day, serving an adult patient population
• Provide both inpatient and outpatient care with approximately 75% inpatient and 25% outpatient responsibilities
• Conduct outpatient post-operative check-ins supported by the attending physician, with potential for solo visits
• Assist attending physician with clinic procedures as needed
• Perform inpatient procedures including pulling drains and lumbar punctures (no OR time or first assist required)
• Perform outpatient procedures including removing stitches and fixing shunts
• Respond to patient messages and communications, providing support alongside the RN team
• Utilize Epic EMR system for all documentation and charting
• Demonstrate strong inpatient neurosurgery skills with emphasis on pre- and post-operative patient care
• Apply skull and cranial-based surgical experience in patient care delivery
• Maintain board certification (ACNP-BC, AGACNP-BC, ACNPC-AG, or ACNPC)
• Maintain valid California state licensure and California DEA with full schedules (Schedule 2/2n)
• Maintain current BLS certification (AHA required)
• Adhere to COVID-19 vaccine requirements including booster (medical/religious exemptions only)
