Job summary

UVA Health in Virginia seeks an Advanced Practice Provider for the Neurology Inpatient Service. You will contribute to a fast-paced academic medical center with a strong emphasis on autonomy, interdisciplinary collaboration, and patient-centered care.

The role includes opportunities for quality improvement, research, and program development. Requirements include PA-C or AGACNP-BC licensure, a master's degree, and 1–2 years neurology experience preferred.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited graduate school of nursing or physician assistant program with a master’s degree.
  • 1–2 years of neurology experience preferred; new graduates supported through a training program.
  • Licensure as NP or PA; VA license required; BLS and ACLS/PALS as required.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures accurate, timely, and compliant documentation in the EMR.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient information per regulations.
  • Facilitates timely patient flow through coordination with the interdisciplinary team.
  • Supports clinical operations per institutional policies and clinical pathways.
  • Participates in quality improvement initiatives, audits, and workflow optimization.
  • Delivers comprehensive neurology care independently and with ICU/ Neurosurgery teams.
  • Orders, interprets, and evaluates diagnostic tests and imaging.
  • Develops and evaluates individualized treatment plans and therapies.
  • Initiates specialty referrals and manages acute clinical situations.
  • Explains procedures to patients and families; supports learner education.

Job description

This position supports the UVA Neurology Inpatient Service and offers a challenging, collaborative, and highly rewarding opportunity for an Advanced Practice Provider. The APP functions as an integral member of a multidisciplinary team while maintaining a high degree of clinical autonomy in the evaluation, management, and longitudinal care of patients with complex neurologic conditions. Working in a fast-paced academic medical center, the APP will care for a diverse inpatient population and contribute to a rapidly expanding neurology service line. The role also provides robust opportunities to engage in quality improvement initiatives, clinical research, program development, and ongoing professional growth.

Licensure: PA-C or AGACNP-BC

  • Experience: 1–2 years of neurology experience preferred; new graduates considered and supported through a thorough training program. No prior procedural experience or demonstrated procedural competency required to apply.
Schedule (1.0 FTE, 40 hours/week)

Administrative Responsibilities
  • Ensures accurate, timely, and compliant documentation in the electronic medical record
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient information in accordance with institutional, state, and federal regulations
  • Facilitates timely patient flow through effective coordination with interdisciplinary team members
  • Supports clinical operations through adherence to institutional policies, procedures, and clinical pathways
  • Participates in quality improvement initiatives, clinical audits, and workflow optimization as assigned
Professional Responsibilities
  • Practices in accordance with professional standards, regulatory requirements, and scope of practice for Advanced Practice Providers
  • Communicates effectively with patients, families, physicians, nursing staff, and interdisciplinary team members
  • Advocates for patients and families regarding educational needs, treatment options, ethical considerations, and patient rights
  • Demonstrates cultural competence and sensitivity to the diverse needs of Neurology patients and families
  • Engages in ongoing professional development, continuing education, and maintenance of certification and licensure
Clinical Responsibilities
  • Provides comprehensive clinical care to neurology patients independently and in collaboration with ICU, Neurosurgery, and Neurology physicians and interdisciplinary team members
  • Performs complete and focused histories and physical examinations
  • Documents clinical findings, including pertinent normal and abnormal findings, in the medical record
  • Orders, interprets, and evaluates diagnostic laboratory tests and imaging studies
  • Formulates medical diagnoses based on clinical assessment and diagnostic findings
  • Develops, implements, and evaluates individualized treatment plans
  • Prescribes and recommends pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic therapies within scope of practice
  • Initiates specialty consultations and referrals as clinically indicated
  • Recognizes and responds to acute and emergent clinical situations, initiating life-saving interventions and activating appropriate interdisciplinary support
  • Explains the necessity, preparation, nature, and anticipated outcomes of procedures to patients, families, staff, and learners
Leadership Responsibilities
  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary team members to initiate, evaluate, and refine clinical pathways and protocols
  • Supports and strengthens interdisciplinary relationships to promote coordinated, patient-centered care
  • Serves as a clinical resource and role model for staff, students, and trainees
  • Contributes to the advancement of Neurology through participation in program development, quality initiatives, and best-practice implementation
  • Promotes a culture of safety, accountability, and excellence in Neurology patient care
Minimum Requirements

Education: Graduate of an accredited graduate school of nursing or physician assistant program with a master’s degree.

Experience: Department and unit specific.

Licensure: License or license eligible as an Advance Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner, and Physician Associate) as set forth by the state of Virginia. If Nurse Practitioner, license to Practice as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia is required. Must demonstrate and maintain all credentialing and licensing requirements of UVA Health System, the Virginia Board of Medicine or the Virginia Board of Nursing, and appropriate certifying bodies. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required. Current PALS/NRP, as required, specific to position. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) as required, specific to position.

Physical Demands

Job requires standing for prolonged periods, frequently bending/stooping, reaching (overhead, extensive, and repetitive); Repetitive motion: computer keyboard. Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull 50 - 100lbs. May be exposed to noise, radiation, radioactive materials, blood/body fluids and infectious disease.

The pay range for this role is $129,323.00 - $171,163.20 annually. Individual compensation will be determined by the selected candidate's qualifications, previous work experience, and/or education.
