This position requires coordination and clinical skills for the comprehensive management of critical care medicine patients, including biological, social, and psychological assessments. The incumbent will possess specialized skills in patient and family care, initial and ongoing medical management, and invasive procedures. They will coordinate with medical/surgical specialty teams to develop and review comprehensive care plans, participate in directing patient care, and ensure adherence to protocols and regulatory guidelines. Responsibilities also include performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, peri-procedural services, coordinating discharge planning, and participating in the education of residents and medical/nursing students.

Provide healthcare services in accordance with state law, professional licensing, and hospital privileges, where applicable. Such services may include, but are not limited to:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

  • Graduate of a CCNE-accredited nursing program with a Master's Degree in Nursing.
  • National Certification by recognized APRN Certification Centers.
  • Licensure or eligibility for licensure as a Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia.
  • BLS Certification required, with additional Advanced Life Support training at the department's discretion.
  • Fundamentals of Critical Care Support (FCCS) Certification required immediately upon hire, based on class availability.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Eligible new graduates will be considered.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • ACGNP certification or ACNP preferred; FNP considered.
  • Experience in acute or critical care preferred.
CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following describes the general nature of work; other duties may be assigned:

  1. Manage comprehensive, individualized care for patients and families in inpatient/critical care.
  2. Collaborate with critical care staff to order tests or consults for patient management.
  3. Perform, interpret, and communicate diagnostic test results.
  4. Consult with inter-professional services regarding abnormal findings.
  5. Develop care plans, including teaching, discharge planning, and referrals.
  6. Participate in physician/team rounds.
  7. Identify unstable or complex cases and facilitate interventions.
  8. Recognize emergencies and initiate appropriate care.
  9. Use critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning in clinical decisions.
  10. Utilize equipment safely.
  11. Coordinate patient discharge or transfer.
  12. Make decisions based on scientific principles and standards of care.
  13. Promote a learning environment responsive to patient and family needs.
  14. Update knowledge base regularly.
  15. Complete clinical competencies and mentor staff.
  16. Communicate effectively with patients, families, and team members.
  17. Document care plans and interventions clearly.
  18. Adhere to performance expectations and organizational values.
  19. Perform initial assessments and develop care plans for new admissions.
  20. Ensure patient summaries and orders are accurate and current.
  21. Manage transitions of care from ICU.
  22. Perform procedures within scope of practice as directed.

Must meet physical demands, including strength and stamina for patient care activities. Reasonable accommodations may be provided.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Work involves close collaboration, irregular hours, biohazards, infectious diseases, and handling deceased or hazardous materials. Safety protocols must be followed.
