Position Overview
This position is responsible for developing clinical expertise. The Advance Practice Professional (APP) Fellow completes comprehensive patient health evaluations, including biological, social, and psychological assessments as assigned by the clinical/faculty team. The APP Fellow assesses and coordinates the educational and psychosocial needs of patients and caretakers, develops and reviews care plans with the clinical team, participates in directing care, and coordinates peri-operative care, discharge planning, and follow-up. The APP Fellow also participates in the educational curriculum outlined in the program.
Minimum Qualifications
Education, Certification, and Licensure
- Bachelor's Degree or Master's Degree as Physician Assistant required.
- Graduate of an ARC-PA approved Physician Assistant training program required.
- Certification by the National Commission for Certification of Physician Assistants required.
- Must be licensed or eligible for licensure by the WV Board of Medicine or WV Board of Osteopathic Medicine.
- American Heart Association BLS Certification required, with additional ALS training at the department's discretion.
Experience
- Eligible new graduates will be considered.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree as Physician Assistant preferred.
- Clinical experience in the fellowship specialty preferred.
Core Duties and Responsibilities

- Manage comprehensive, individualized patient care in inpatient, post-discharge, and ambulatory settings.
- Complete daily rounds and pre-procedure evaluations.
- Conduct integrated assessments as assigned.
- Participate in peri-operative management.
- Order diagnostics or consults as appropriate.
- Perform and communicate diagnostic results following guidelines.
- Collaborate with staff regarding abnormal findings.
- Document clinical evaluations accurately.
- Coordinate discharge and follow-up services.
- Perform procedures within scope of practice.
- Develop individualized care plans including teaching and referrals.
- Provide care across the age continuum.
- Participate in rounds and consultations.
- Identify unstable or complex cases and communicate for intervention.
- Coordinate discharge and postoperative care.
- Assist in outcome data collection.
- Recognize and respond to emergencies.
- Evaluate patient and family teaching effectiveness.
- Apply critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning.
- Use equipment safely and effectively.
- Make decisions based on scientific principles and standards of care.
- Use educational strategies to collaborate with staff and patients.

Physical Requirements
Work requires strength and stamina, including lifting and moving materials over 40 lbs.
Work Environment
Work may involve working closely with others, irregular hours, biohazards, infectious diseases, working near deceased individuals, and handling water and electrical equipment hazards.
Skills and Abilities
- Proficiency with computers.
- Strong communication skills.
Additional Qualifications for Nurse Practitioners
- Graduate of a CCNE-accredited nursing program with a Master's Degree in Nursing.
- National Certification by recognized APRN certifying bodies.
- Licensure or eligibility as a Registered Nurse and APRN in West Virginia.
- BLS Certification required, with additional ALS training at the department's discretion.
- RNFA certification required upon hire, as coverage in the Operating Room is necessary.
