Job Description

K.S.A.'s:

  1. Master’s degree from an accredited School of Nursing appropriate for certification as an Advanced Practice Nurse/ Certified Nurse Anesthetist required. Doctoral related degree preferred.
  2. CRNA experience preferred. Prior experience in pediatrics preferred.
  3. Licensure in the State of Illinois as an APN and Certified by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists required.
  4. Demonstrated experience as delineated in clinical privileges through credentialing by the Medical Staff Office required.
  5. Basic Life Support Certification required. Pediatric Advanced Life Support Certification required in some specialty areas.
  6. Strong interpersonal skills, basic computer skills, and strong verbal and written communication skills.

Job Duties:

  1. Perform and document the preanesthesia assessment and evaluation of the patient.
  2. Review, request, and order laboratory/diagnostic studies.
  3. Obtain informed consent for anesthesia and related services.
  4. Select, obtain, order, and administer preanesthetic medication or treatment.
  5. Develop and implement an anesthesia care plan.
  6. Select, obtain, prepare, and use equipment, invasive and non-invasive monitors, supplies, and drugs for the administration of sedation, anesthesia, and pain management services; perform safety checks as needed.
  7. Select, order, obtain, and administer analgesic and anesthetic agents, adjuvant drugs, accessory drugs, fluids, or blood products necessary to provide anesthesia services.
  8. Perform all aspects of airway management, including fiberoptic intubation and video laryngoscopy.
  9. Select appropriate intraprocedural monitors based on anesthesia standards, patient specific conditions, and surgical requirements.
  10. Obtain peripheral or central venous and arterial access as appropriate for the case and the patient condition.
  11. Administer intravenous crystalloid, colloid and blood products as necessary to maintain intravascular volume and blood pressure during surgical intervention.
  12. Administer the proper dose of anesthetic, anesthesia-related and emergency drugs necessary to maintain appropriate insensibility to pain and hemodynamic stability, adequate perfusion of body tissues and normal oxygenation.
  13. Document accurately on the anesthesia record.
  14. Report any anesthesia complications via proper reporting structures and obtain consultations and follow-up for patient safety.
  15. Facilitate emergence and recovery from anesthesia by evaluating patient response, and selecting, ordering, and administering medications, fluids, and ventilator support to maintain patient stability during transfer.
  16. Initiate and administer post-anesthesia pharmacological or fluid support of the cardiovascular system.
  17. Initiate and administer respiratory support to ensure adequate ventilation and oxygenation in the postanesthesia period.
  18. Evaluate the patient’s response to anesthesia and surgery; take appropriate corrective action during the postanesthesia period.
  19. Provide postanesthesia follow-up evaluation and care.
  20. Implement acute pain management modalities.
  21. Manage emergency situations by assessing, stabilizing, and determining disposition of patients, including providing airway management, administration of emergency drugs and fluids, and using basic and advanced cardiac life support techniques.
  22. Place and manage regional and neuraxial anesthetic techniques.
  23. Use and interpretation of ultrasound for regional anesthesia and vascular access.
  24. Provide expert clinical care, education, consultation, advocacy, research, leadership and mentorship.
  25. Promote the advancement of the nursing profession at Lurie Children’s and the community-at-large. This may include publication, participation in professional organizations and providing educational support to the nursing staff.
  26. Collaborate and coordinate care with medical team to deliver evidenced-based care and establish best practices in clinical care.
  27. Conduct and participate in research.
  28. Meet the Medical Staffs Allied Health Practitioners core measures of performance related to patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning and improvement, interpersonal communication skills, professionalism, and system-based practice.
  29. Participate in the education of anesthesia trainees and airway learners from other departments.
  30. Attend departmental meetings.
  31. Perform job functions adhering to service principles with customer service focus of innovation, service excellence and teamwork to provide the highest quality care and service to our patients, families, co-workers and others.
  32. Other job functions as assigned.

Pay Range

$189,040.00-$283,560.00 Salary
