Job description

Overview

Draws blood from patients, processes specimens, performs limited testing, and handles administrative duties. Work at various Mercy facilities performing these functions as needed. Work alternate shifts, weekends, and holidays to ensure adequate service coverage. Perform other duties and projects as assigned.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Proficient with Hospital Information System (HIS) and Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) to manage orders and patient registration.
  • Performs patient registration, payment collection, data entry of demographic and insurance information, supporting efficient sample processing.
  • Transfers test requests into HIS and laboratory systems from scripts, requisitions, and verbal orders.
  • Answers and screens calls professionally.
  • Resolves unclear test orders by contacting relevant personnel; documents actions taken; escalates unresolved issues.
  • Generates lists and labels; runs daily reports.
  • Reviews order monitor and collection summary reports.
  • Assesses special collection requirements and patient preparation needs.
  • Identifies patients using two identifiers.
  • Performs phlebotomy proficiently across patient populations.
  • Follows safety and infection control protocols.
  • Assesses patient responses; interacts at a comfortable level; obtains medical assistance when needed.
  • Labels specimens accurately with patient info and collection details.
  • Ensures specimen integrity using aseptic techniques.
  • Collects various samples including swabs, urine, heel and finger sticks, blood cultures, and blood bank specimens.
  • Performs arterial punctures and special collection procedures as required.
  • Provides patient instructions for specimen collection.
  • Collects specialized samples like breath alcohol, drug screens, and pregnancy tests.
  • Accessions and processes specimens, ensuring testing acceptability, centrifuging, aliquoting, and proper delivery.
  • Notifies testing personnel of stat requests.
  • Receives and tracks specimens, resolves identification issues, and manages transportation logistics.
  • Understands insurance and billing processes related to registration and specimen collection.
  • Coordinates phlebotomy team functions at nursing home sites, including driving and specimen transport.
  • Performs waived testing and some rapid tests as directed.
  • Performs EKGs where required and communicates critical results.
  • Enters results into LIS, maintains equipment, and manages supplies.
  • Provides training and mentorship to staff; assists with competency assessments and training programs.
  • Evaluates new products and demonstrates exemplary phlebotomy skills.
  • Supports administrative functions as needed.

Education & Experience

High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Successful completion of a phlebotomy course and/or two years of experience. Healthcare experience such as Paramedic, EMT, CNA, or MA is helpful.

Certification/Licensure

Phlebotomy Certification required. Maintain a valid driver’s license and insurance if driving is required. Maintain an acceptable driving record.

Additional Requirements

Pass driver’s license and background checks as applicable. Ability to follow instructions.

Work Environment

Moderate noise level; occupational exposure to fumes, airborne particles, and chemicals.

Age of Patients Served

Neonate to Geriatric.

Information Access

Access patient care information necessary for duties.

Special Physical Demands

Must frequently stand, walk, bend, handle, reach, and communicate; occasionally lift up to 25 lbs and push over 50 lbs.
