Job summary

Qualifications

• Must be certified in all National Institute of Metalworking Skills (NIMS) Level 1 credentials within six months of hire.
• Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication; ability to develop syllabi and exams; ability to develop learning strategies, curriculum and assessments.
• Teaching assignments may range from summer camps to high school and adult courses.

Virginia Western Community College is a two-year public institution of higher education operating under the Virginia Community College System, a statewide system of community colleges. The College operates under the policies established by the State Board for Community Colleges and the Virginia Western Community College Local Advisory Board.

Virginia Western is located on a 70-acre campus in southwest Roanoke, VA. The service region of the College includes Roanoke, Salem, Roanoke County, Craig County, Franklin County, and southern Botetourt County. The College was established in 1966 and has grown from an initial enrollment of 1,352 to its current annual enrollment of over 9,000 students in credit courses and more than 1,400 enrollments in fast-track workforce and continuing education courses.

Virginia Western Community College (VWCC) is accepting applications for a full-time, 12-month, restricted Advanced Manufacturing and Technology Faculty (Lecturer) in Workforce Solutions. Reporting to the Dean of STEM and Workforce Solutions, collaborating with assigned Program Coordinator(s), and at times working with the Corporate Training Specialist, this full-time faculty position prepares for classes and fulfills a variety of technical instructional assignments, including conventional machine tool operation, blueprint reading/engineering drawings, precision measurement tools, set-up, programming, operation of CNC lathes and mills, and the operation of CAD/CAM systems. The position is responsible for successfully teaching and implementing curricula such as specific year-long Department of Education-approved curriculum for high school students and more accelerated workforce preparation for adult learners. The incumbent teaches and helps coordinate activities related to work-based learning, including registered apprenticeships, and actively assists with student recruitment. This is an established position in Workforce, intended to bring about the growth and success of students, the machining program, and regional employers. The incumbent performs a variety of instructional and program-related tasks to support the mission of Workforce Solutions. This is a hands-on teacher/advocate/ambassador position requiring the willingness and ability to engage stakeholders and grow a winning program, not a passive classroom teaching position. Success will be measured by key performance indicators such as course and program reputation, instructor evaluations, course completion, FastForward credential attainment, enrollment growth, stakeholder feedback, and success of graduates.

NOTE: This is a restricted professional faculty position subject to continued availability of funds and programming needs.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Five years of experience in a machining environment, which may include coursework in a Community College or University setting, using a variety of metalworking tools, processes and machines, primarily lathes and mills, and with experience in CNC / G-code programming.
• Must hold a current—or actively apply for and attain--VDOE Teaching License for high school student instruction within the VDOE required grace period.
• Must be—or become--certified in all National Institute of Metalworking Skills (NIMS) Level 1 credentials (11 credentials) within six months of hire.
• This position will require excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills; ability to develop syllabi and exams; ability to develop learning strategies, curriculum and assessments; as well as the ability to work with students of varying abilities from diverse backgrounds.
• Teaching assignments may range from summer kids camps, to high school courses, to adult courses, preparing students for manufacturing jobs, and even professional development for local business and industry.

Additional Considerations

• Associate degree in a Career and Technical Education field preferred.
• Classroom Machining instruction experience, providing instruction in accelerated formats geared towards certification exam preparation.
• VDOE Teaching License for high school student instruction.
• Demonstrated track record of high level of student credential and institutional outcomes with the ability to deliver instruction in the classroom and machine shop.
• National Institute of Metalworking Skills (NIMS) credentials.
• Areas of expertise include: machine setup, machining applications, programming with ProtoTrak, Haas, other machine controls and simulators, process planning, precision measurement, inspection, print reading, GD&T and symbols, metallurgy, cutting tool selection and assembly, machine maintenance and shop and personal safety.
• Familiarity with CAD to Machining workflow, experience using Autodesk Fusion or SolidWorks, and experience with 3D scanners and CMMs.
