Job summary

The District of Columbia Public Library seeks an Adult Librarian in the Public Services unit to provide reference and advisory services to adults and plan programs that support lifelong learning and community engagement.

You will develop and maintain the branch collection, guide patrons in using the online catalog, conduct outreach to schools and nonprofits, and collaborate with staff to meet community needs.

Qualifications

• Master's degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited program.
• At least 1 year of direct, in-person experience working with adult populations.
• Experience in an urban public library preferred.
• Professional knowledge of public librarianship principles and practices.
• Experience providing excellent customer service to children, adults, or teens.
• Experience designing, promoting, delivering, and evaluating public programs.
• Ability to exercise independent judgment in applying policies and procedures.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Experience using MS Office, Google Suite, and familiarity with CMS tools (SharePoint, Drupal).
• For current DC government employees: at least 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to CS‑8 (non‑probationary).

Responsibilities

• Provides reference assistance, readers advisory and information to adults (20+) and educators.
• Guides customers in the use of the online catalog, reference and circulation resources.
• Plans and conducts programs such as computer training and book discussions.
• Assists in developing the book collection and recommends titles for purchase.
• Maintains outreach to local schools, community organizations and nonprofits.
• Plans and conducts programming for adults per system requirements.
• Manages location’s physical collection through weeding and selection processes.
