Job summary

Richmond Public Schools seeks an experienced instructor for Adult Education – ABE/GED (HSE) at the Richmond Technical Center in Richmond, VA. This is a part-time hourly role starting immediately, reporting to the School Principal.

• Candidate must have experience using nontraditional teaching methods, preferably in an adult environment.
• Must be able to teach at the pace of students and work one‑on‑one or in groups.
• Commitment to serving a diverse community, including low‑income families and Adult Basic Education learners.
• Self‑motivated and able to work at a standalone satellite site.
• Ability to manage and maintain a professional classroom for adult learners.
• Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel for lesson plans and attendance forms.
• Experience with Distance Education tools and basic computer skills.
• Maintain CASAS and Assessment Policy certification as mandated by VDOE.

• Incorporates audio-visual materials and real-life applications into instruction.
• Administers assessments in accordance with the staff calendar and instructor manual.

• Develops and implements retention strategies to promote completion of participant goals.
• Attends mandatory regional staff trainings and participates in professional development.

General Description:

Duties performed typically in a school setting.Performs professional work providing teaching and/or training services to students in a specializedsubject. Work requires frequent standing, sitting, walking and light lifting, up to 10 pounds. Effective verbal and written communication skills for expressing or exchanging ideas, hearing to perceive information at a normal spoken word level and visual acuity for preparing and analyzing written or computer data.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Maintains a professional classroom with e?ective classroom management.
• Provides instruction in Adult Basic Education participants whose basic skills range from the third to the twelfth grade level. Prepares lesson plans which incorporate critical-thinking, problem-solving, and test‑taking skills.
• Incorporates a variety of audio-visual materials and real‑life applications into instruction.
• Administers assessments in accordance with the sta? calendar and instructor manual.
• Teaches to skill de?cits as outlined by CASAS prescriptions.
• Incorporates computer-assisted instruction in teaching methods and promotes basic computer literacy.
• Maintains educational ?les and student portfolios for each participant, including placement tests/scores, post-test scores, and work samples.
• Submits attendance and lesson plans as outlined on the sta? calendar.
• Maintains attendance and other student records and tracks hours of instruction using the ASPD and other forms.
• Develops and implements retention strategies and shares these with HSE Specialist to promote greater completion of participant goals.
• Attends mandatory regional sta? trainings which may include two Saturday trainings each year.
• Engages in professional development opportunities to enhance skills.
• Facilitates in‑service training for other sta? when appropriate.
• Maintains a working RPS email and checks messages regularly.
• Uses the inventory book to sign out instructional aids including classroom sets of books, laptops, workbooks, manipulatives, document camera and calculators.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in education or a related ?eld required.
• Candidate must have experience using nontraditional teaching methods, preferably in an adult environment.
• Must be able to teach at the pace of students and be able to work with students one‑on‑one or in large or
  small groups.
• Must demonstrate a commitment and ability to serve a diverse community, including low‑income families and Adult Basic Education learners.
• Self‑motivated and able to work at a standalone satellite site.
• Ability to manage and maintain a professional classroom, providing instruction to adult
  participants whose basic skills range from the third grade to the twelfth grade level.
• Pro?cient in Microsoft Word and Excel for completing lesson plan and attendance forms required.
• Possess working skills in the use of technology to deliver Distance Education instruction, communicate via e‑mail and teach basic computer skills to the adult learner.
• Maintain CASAS and Assessment Policy certification as mandated by VDOE.

PAY SCALE:$33.00/hr.

LENGTH OF CONTRACT:This is a temporary position and can be terminated at any time by Richmond Public Schools.
