Job summary
JCC Greater Boston in Newton is seeking an Adult Class & Workshop Instructor to teach adults in their subject of expertise, adhering to safety policies and communicating with the manager about any relevant matters.
This is a limited part-time, +/- 1-10 hours per week, non-exempt position offering a great work environment, perks, and a competitive starting pay rate. Pay will be determined by qualifications and internal equity.

- Requires a bachelor’s degree and minimum of 2 years’ teaching, tutoring, or facilitation experience with adult learners.
- Subject-area credentials per discipline as specified by industry standards.
- Ability to pass a background check and meet ADA-related requirements.

Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Arts & Ideas, the Adult Class & Workshop Instructor will instruct adults in their subject of expertise, adhering to all relevant safety policies and protocols of JCC Greater Boston and communicate with manager and/or other designated employees directly about any relevant matters.

Primary responsibilities include, and are not limited to:
Own the quality and consistency of the learning experience, from planning through in-room delivery.
- Design and continuously refine class content so it is welcoming, accessible, and appropriately-paced for adults of all ages and skill levels.
- Identify, requisition, and coordinate purchase of all supplies needed for class, ensuring materials are on hand well ahead of each session.
- Arrive with enough time to fully set up the classroom and materials so instruction starts precisely on schedule.
- Adapt lesson plans in real time to accommodate varying skill levels, questions, or unexpected classroom dynamics.
- Reset the room at the end of class to the condition in which it was found, including wiping down table surfaces and returning shared equipment/supplies to storage.
- Follow all JCC Greater Boston safety policies and protocols during setup, instruction, and breakdown.
Foster a welcoming environment where students feel welcomed, informed, and connected to the class and to each other.
- Open sessions with introductions so students get to know one another, especially in multi-week classes.
- Proactively welcome new students and help them integrate smoothly when joining a class already in progress.
- Notify students promptly and clearly of any schedule changes, whether due to instructor cancellation, JCC scheduling, or weather-related closures.
- Follow up directly with any student who is consistently missing class to check in and encourage re-engagement.
- Inform students with sufficient lead time when it's time to register for the next session and encourage continued participation.
- Maintain approachable, two-way communication with students throughout the session, addressing questions or concerns as they arise.
- Escalate to your supervisor (rather than handling directly) any request from a student for financial assistance.
- Actively support and participate in the promotion of your class or workshop (e.g., word of mouth, sharing materials, referrals).
Keep accurate records and maintain reliable, timely communication with JCC staff and supervisors so the class is well executed and runs smoothly behind the scenes, building a positive reputation.
- Take attendance at every class session.
- Follow purchasing approval and reimbursement processes and submit invoices/receipts timely.
- Maintain responsive communication with your supervisor, flagging issues (scheduling conflicts, low enrollment, space/supply problems) as soon as they arise.
- Respond to inquiries from the FEJL team within a reasonable timeframe (e.g., 1–2 business days).
- Reach out to the FEJL team for support with administrative processes as needed.
- Actively create an inclusive and welcoming environment where each individual is valued, respected, and part of the class community
- Support JCC Greater Boston’s mission, vision, and values of belonging, joyfulness, collaboration and transformation
- Enter all worked hours into Paylocity on a weekly basis, submitted accurately and on time following the pay schedule deadlines.
- Attend staff meetings, supervisory meetings and trainings as assigned.

Requires a bachelor’s degree and minimum of 2 years’ teaching, tutoring, or facilitation experience with adult learners, leading workshops in a group/class environment and must demonstrate expertise in subject matter being taught with credentials meeting current industry standards.
Preferred Premium Experience: significant industry experience (typically 5–10+ years) combined with demonstrated professional standing, reputation, and a track record of work in the field.
Must meet the minimum subject-area credentials as set by the industry standards for the specific discipline being taught. Examples by discipline type:
- Visual & Studio Arts (painting, ceramics, sculpture, etc.) – MFA (Master of Fine Arts), or BFA with substantial professional exhibition/practice history
- Racquet & Individual Sports Instruction (e.g., tennis) – Sport-specific instructor certification (e.g., PTR, USPTA for tennis)
- Fitness, Wellness & Movement – Nationally recognized certification (e.g., NASM, ACE, RYT-200) or degree in exercise/sports science
- Academic, Humanities & Language – Bachelor's degree in a relevant field; Master's degree preferred
- Specialized/Technical Skills (e.g., culinary, crafts, technology) – Bachelor's degree and/or relevant professional certification or licensure where applicable
- High-Performance/Elite Coaching (e.g., advanced sport science) – Advanced degree or certification in the relevant field, typically paired with 5–10+ years of applied experience and recognized standing in the field
Equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted at the JCC’s discretion to meetthe minimum hiring criteria.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to create an inclusive, respectful classroom environment.
- Reliable and punctual, with strong organizational skills for class prep and supply management.
- Comfortable using basic digital tools for communication and payroll entry (e.g., email, Paylocity).
- Effective communication with a variety of personalities
- Excellent customer service and a compassionate, patient spirit
- Demonstrated success conducting classes in a high-quality manner that supports students in building their skills and knowledge accordingly
- Ability to pass a background check, consistent with JCC Greater Boston policy.
Able to work well in-person in a busy, dynamic, and sometimes noisy environment. Ability to set up and break down classroom materials, which may include light lifting (up to 25 lbs). Ability to stand, move around the classroom, and demonstrate techniques as needed for the subject taught.
