Job summary

Howard County Government seeks a detailed-oriented clerk to provide customer service for residents connected to the public water and sewer system. The role involves clerical support for the division, including data entry, billing reviews, and processing payments and notices.

Starting salary range is $20.03–$22.58 per hour, equivalent to about $41,670–$46,961 annually. The position requires a high school diploma or GED with related clerical experience. Local Maryland county benefits apply.

  • Prepares delinquent water accounts for tax sale.
  • Reviews and verifies payment batch information.
  • Assists with reviewing meter readings for billing as needed.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Provides customer service to County residents connected to the public water & sewer system. Works includes the performance of clerical support of water and sewer system of the Division.

STARTING SALARY HIRING RANGE:

$20.03 - $22.58

$41,670 - $46,961

CLASS DESCRIPTION:

Performs intermediate technical level administrative support work under general supervision from an administrative or technical superior. Work typically involves performing clerical and secretarial work, such as data entry and document management, file maintenance, and public contact and service. Work may also include accounting clerical tasks such as bookkeeping, keeping of financial and other important records; preparing vouchers for payment; documenting and depositing cash receipts; and controlling, recording, and storing data. Work at this level may also include independent responsibility for a routine clerical process.

Include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

  • Provides customer service for Water and Sewer customers by phone and/or in person.
  • Schedules meter investigations.
  • Prepares and verifies penalty waivers.
  • Prepares bankruptcy case research for the Office of Law.
  • Maintains bankruptcy account status and prepares associated letters as needed.
  • Reviews and verifies accounts for bankruptcy, foreclosures, and tax sale.
  • Prepares delinquent water accounts for tax sale.
  • Reviews and verifies payment batch information.
  • Retrieves and returns calls left for Division after business hours as needed.
  • Reviews and process return mail as needed.
  • Assist with reviewing meter readings for billing as needed.
  • Maintain and process special mailings as requested by customers as needed.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

High School Diploma or GED and three (3) years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
