Job summary

The Department of Inspections and Appeals Administrative Hearings Division in Des Moines, IA seeks an Administrative Law Judge 2 (ALJ) to adjudicate a wide range of contested hearings for state agencies and boards in accordance with Iowa Code and federal law.

The successful candidate will manage a high-volume docket, issue fair, legally sound decisions, and work independently with strong research and writing skills, handling conflicts professionally.

Qualifications

• Must hold a current, active license to practice law in Iowa.
• Experience in administrative law, litigation, or judicial clerkship preferred.

Responsibilities

• Conduct telephone and in-person contested case hearings in a fair and impartial manner.
• Prepare timely proposed decisions based on applicable law and evidence.
• Ensure all hearing participants are afforded due process.
• Participate in division activities and special projects as assigned.

Education

Juris Doctor (JD)

Bachelor's degree
