Responsibilities
  • Develop, manage and control the division’s annual budget; report variances and recommend corrective action; provide forecasts as needed.
  • Manage division funding sources by monitoring revenue and expenditure activity.
  • Prepare and manage grant and contract proposals involving a variety of funding sources and agencies, ensuring compliance with institutional and federal guidelines.
  • Analyze and evaluate existing administrative systems; identify opportunities for improvement and increased efficiencies; implement and coordinate improvements including staff coverage, scheduling and payroll backup.
  • Direct analytical studies of existing or proposed services and activities to provide an economic basis for management decisions, improve operational/financial performance, and realize productivity improvements.
  • Act as primary liaison between the department and UMass Medical School Payroll, HR, and Information Services departments; represent the department at administrative meetings within and outside the Medical School.
  • Oversee and provide human‑resource support in areas of staffing, recruitment, counseling, compensation, and benefits; ensure all hiring, performance, contracting and funding activities are completed.
  • Supervise and evaluate the performance of support and other assigned staff; provide support in the development of business initiatives; identify and implement professional development opportunities.
  • Train, develop, and provide technical consultation related to existing business processes and process improvement.
  • Train and provide ongoing education to ensure awareness of, compliance with, and uniform implementation of program, university, state, and funding agency regulations, business process policies, procedures and systems; review and assure all departmental policies are current.
  • Maintain adequate office supplies, space and equipment; oversee purchasing of supplies and capital equipment.
  • Collaborate with School representatives to define and prioritize departmental strategy and direction; identify trends, appraise cause and effect, and evaluate opportunities to improve department performance.
  • Serve as liaison with external organizations and other School departments.
  • Adhere to University, State, and funding agency regulations.
  • Perform other duties as required.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • At least 4 years of related experience (Bachelors) or 5 years (Masters).
  • Prior supervisory experience required (Bachelor: 4 years; Masters: 2 years).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and financial software.
  • Ability to analyze complex data, develop business initiatives, and implement system improvements.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and institutional regulations affecting research, education, and service functions.
Compensation and Benefits

In alignment with our commitment to pay transparency, the base salary range for this position is listed above (exclusive of benefits and retirement). Final base salary offers are determined based on a combination of factors, including skills, education, and relevant experience, with internal equity considered for fair and consistent compensation. Offers are typically made within the mid‑range to allow for future growth and development within the role.
