The Department of Education at Saint Joseph’s College of Maine invites applications for an Adjunct Instructor in Special Education to teach an undergraduate course in Assistive Technology during the Spring 2027 semester.

The Department of Education is committed to preparing thoughtful, skilled, and responsive educators who are equipped to support the learning and development of all students. Through rigorous coursework, meaningful application of research and evidence-based practice, and close engagement with faculty, students develop the knowledge and skills necessary to meet the diverse academic, behavioral, and social-emotional needs of learners in today’s schools.

Position Description:

This adjunct position will teach one course during the Spring 2027 semester. The course will be taught in person on the Saint Joseph’s College campus and will meet twice each week for 1 hour and 45 minutes per class: Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:45pm-4:30pm

The course focuses on the use of assistive technology and evidence-based instructional strategies to support K–12 students with disabilities and other learning needs . Topics include identifying assistive technology devices and services, assessing student and instructional needs, selecting appropriate technology supports, integrating technology into instruction, and evaluating the effectiveness of assistive technology for diverse learners.

Course learning outcomes include preparing students to:

Identify assistive technology devices and services that support students with academic, behavioral, communication, and access needs.

Assess student and instructional needs to determine appropriate assistive technology supports.

Select and apply research-based practices for integrating assistive technology into instruction.

Integrate assistive technology into the instructional process across K–12 learning environments.

Evaluate the effectiveness and appropriateness of assistive technology supports for learners with diverse backgrounds, characteristics, abilities, and needs.

Minimum Qualifications:

A master’s degree in Special Education, Education, Educational Technology, or a closely related field.

Relevant professional experience supporting K–12 students with disabilities.

Knowledge of assistive technology, accessibility tools, and instructional strategies used to support students with diverse learning needs.

Commitment to using current, evidence-based pedagogical practices, including effective course and curriculum design.
